i am wanting to get one for the old pioneers and pioneer partners but not sure if the same one will work from husky
I may have the actual tool for that. I'll look.

I just did this on a 262. If you plan to replace the seal, heat it a lightly pry it off with a screwdriver. Worked great. For installation, just heat and drop on.

I just recently took one of those off. I was splitting the cases and after some thought it came to me to just use the Husqvarna case splitting tool I had. While technically not the correct way, it did work. Put the case splitter tool on and started cranking slowly, once the seal came up against the gear, it pushed the seal into the bearing then it pushed the gear off just slicker than slobbers. All done in one. Same thing, was replacing the bearing seal and gear, so no worries.

Im fixing a 262 that needs a case half. This is an oldie, one owner saw, with the non-decomp jug/87/crank drive worm gear.

I plan on replacing it with the drum drive oiler anyway, so the end result for the gear itself didn't really mater for me.

After trying heat and a lot of prying and cursing, I came up with this ghetto method that worked.

I figured someone can reference in the future for help on a build.

Looks more like a redneck method than a ghetto method.

The gear is more-or-less 1/2" pipe thread. I used a 1/2" black iron female x female coupler with a piece of pipe threaded on one end and a nut tack welded on the other. I didn't measure the length of the pipe....maybe 2" including threads? It just needs to be longer than the pto end of the crank when threaded into the coupler. I think it is a 1/2" or 9/16" bolt...doesn't really matter, that pushes on the crank as the coupler pulls the worm gear. puller.jpg

The worm gear fits in 1/2" npt ...not 3/4

My vid proves it.

That is a very nice puller though. I may have to make one

Thanks. Edited. Just going by memory... which is fading.

some other dingleberry posted the same thing a while back...which is why I have a 1"/ 3/4" adapter ... then I had to go BACK to lowes and get a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter that would fit the original adapter. ie, someone else posted the wrong size too ... and caused me to buy the wrong part. just makin sure there is clarity is all...

very nice job on the tool.... a much more elegant design than mine. on the upside to doing it my way, no need for a welder. just need a pitman arm puller, a grinder and the adapters and random sockets. your way, need a couple adapters, nut, bolt and a mig welder. :)

love my mig btw... it sits at my folks place but love when I get the chance to use it....

I bought one of those worm gear removers from ebay.I didnt know at the time there was another piece that went with it,so I just blocked the piston with a rope, then screwed the pipe looking .thingy over the worm gear until it stopped against the case, then I grabbed a pair of channel locks and turned the pipe a little more and a little more until the worm gear came off,And I did 3 more worm gears the same way.4 husqvarna 51 s with no damage to the case on any of the saws. Not the right way,but it worked for me.
