I see conversations and threads about college and pro ball but very, very, very, few every make it to that level. I think is high time we had a thread about the roots of the game that many of us can relate to. This is week #1 for Illinois High School Football and I am betting it is the same for most states. My team was up 38-0 at the half and now 45-0 with a lighting delay.

I just drop my kid off at games and pay the entry fee, does that count? 😁

I am amazed at how many folks argue and fight about college/pro ball but forget where real football starts.

I guess I just care about kiddos and not about the money hungry players AND owners.

Two of our sons tried Band but it just did not work for them. That does mean there is anything wrong with Band whatsoever! One of my friends in school was a hell of a drummer. We ended up going to the same college and he had a band scholarship there. When I was in school there were boys on the football team that were also in Band. At halftime they took their helmet off and picked up their instrument to join the band on the field.

Our local team is #4 in the state right now but tonight will be a huge challenge.

For all that are stuck in college ball a local kid got a helluva good reception today in his college game to pound the chit out of Duke.

The school that forfeited at halftime in week #1 against us forfeited earlier this week for their game. They are lacking numbers and the kids they have are so beat up they cannot play.

It is sad that this is what the roots of a great game has become......

Sounds like our team. We have one high school in the county so we are in 4A but we only have 34-35 kids on the team. We have a few dang good players out for various injuries. The teams in our region show up with 75-80 kids or more on their team and have plenty of subs. My son played nearly every play last week. They just can’t compete like that. Last night we played a school that has a similar size program and it was a good game. Back and forth scoring, great plays, and we ended up with the W. Our state athletics administration needs to look at a new classification system, but it won’t help our son any. He is a junior and they won’t reclassify again until 2028.

What are the enrollment parameters for 4A in Tennessee and is there a multiplier for private schools?

Football is split into two divisions. Private schools have a multiplier/success formula and public schools are split into 6 classes. 744-1042 enrollment is the standard this cycle but three teams bumped up. One has been the state champ several years. We were in the same class last cycle with them and it was never a fair game, lol. Even the 2A team we played Friday had several more players than us. Three coaches in three years don’t help anything either. The school board won’t allow us to have a booster club and we have to beg for any repairs to facilities.

Illinois football is a nightmare for plethora of reasons. We have (8) classes for football and the private schools play right along with the public schools. They do not actually assign a class to teams until the end of the regular season when they gurus are setting the playoff pairings. They take the top 256 teams in the state and break them into 8 classes of 32 teams based on enrollment. You could be 2A one year 3A the next and the following year back to 2A all with the same basic enrollment. There is a multiplier used for the playoffs but it is a joke.

That’s my favorite age to watch. My son didn’t start until 8th grade. I played from age 5 till 20. I’m glad he didn’t start until later since I groan annd pop every time I get up!

Kids are excited at young ages but sadly their interest is beat out of them as they get older due to many reasons.

We had some key players have to sit out the first half due to some stupid decisions they made. 76-0 was the final score. On the ride home I asked my son if he has had enough. Of course he said, “next years my last year, why would I quit after this season?” The schedule we have to play is definitely not in line with our caliber of team but these boys leave it all on the field every Friday.

A final score of 76-0 is a damn disgrace!!!! Of course I do not know the specifics but from the surface I believe both coaches need to step down or be terminated immediately. I assume Tennessee does not have a "mercy rule". In Illinois it used to be 50 points but has now changed to 35 points. In the first half it is a normal game. At the end of the first half if one team is up by 35 points or more there is a running clock in the second half. If at the end of the first half the point differential is less than 35 but during the second half if a team goes up by 35 then it becomes a running clock.

If the coach of the team up by 35 is worth his salt he will put his players in the game that do not get to see a lot of varsity playing time. Of course some coaches have a brain of manure and leave the starters in just to pad their records, run the score up, and earn playoff points based on the end of season point differential.

On the other side the coach of the team down by 35 or more should do the same. He needs to put some younger kids in (as long as the opposing team does also). When the score gets too far out of hand it is time to call a time out, tell an official it is over, walk across the field, and shake the opposing coach's hand.

Now I am not saying once a lead gets to 35 the game is over but common sense has to rule. I have seen way too many games where coaches make decisions that harm kids and dammit these are kids!!!!

We do have a mercy rule but you can’t forfeit a district game. We were playing a lot of young guys from the beginning, because the upperclassmen are immature and decided to make stupid decisions last week as a “prank”. It got blown out of proportion and the school admin got involved. So those players had to sit out the first half and our QB1 was out the entire game. The other coach is known for “making a statement”. It’s not hard to do when you are playing with 75-80 players vs a team that were down to 25 or so between injuries and suspensions. I told my wife at halftime I would just assume grab our son and head to the house, but I’ve been there as well. We play a team more our caliber this week. They are in the class we used to be in and it’s went into OT the past two years.
