Firewood thread!!! Let's see what you got!!!!

I had set those two stems aside from the firewood pile in order to do just that. The top was blown out of that cherry and rot got into the stem. I thought I could get an 8' sawlog out of it but, alas, when I cut into it there was rot all the way down. You can see white in the visible cracks, that is fungus. It would not have been worth the effort. Trust me, I love black cherry lumber. Much of the trim in my house is black cherry I milled from these woods.

Now that you mention it, I can see those cracks. However, they probably wouldn’t have kept me from trying to mill it anyway.

I have been thinning woods in different sections to get Laurel and small trees that will never amount to anything cleared to make the overall health better.

I end up with a lot of 3-5” oak for firewood much of which needs no splitting.

Slow process. So glad for my grapple.

More thinning today (back to the office tomorrow) with my SIL helping. Took down a few 6-8” class trees and skidded them up to where we could limb them up.

Did y’all know Laurel is toxic? Among other things it can make your BP bottom out. Wear gloves and avoid getting it in your mouth and don’t wipe your eyes with your gloves.

My brush pile in the pasture is growing. SIL is a full time firefighter and is also on the local VFD. He and some of those firebugs will come burn it this fall for me.

Wish there was a really effective herbacide for laurel (foliage spray). We’ve been treating the stumps but lots of little sprouts around.

Heard Laurel was toxic and maybe Rhododendron too. Nastiest reaction I've ever gotten was clearing blackberry with a brushcutter.
Mouth and throat felt like one big ulcer for days.
