Firewood thread!!! Let's see what you got!!!!

Firewood delivery yesterday. It was about two miles away, so I just put my flashers on and drove slow. A little over a cord there. Russian olive, box elder, ash, elm. I keep telling my wife that we need a 3/4 ton. But maybe 3/4 ton springs will get me by.

Well this storm brought down 5 more oaks, here is a good sized one. Time to get cutting and splitting again, lots of rot on this one though

I was also affected by the recent high winds in CA but only a huge Doug Fir came down nearby. Anymore I try to avoid collecting too much oak since it seems to take forever to season properly. In your area how long does it take for oak like that to drop below 20% moisture, assuming the splits are not huge? We're right on the coastal fog line plus I don't have a full-sun location to dry so I find it really takes over a year to reach a moisture level I'm happy with. Madrone though is so much easier to deal with and I try to cherry pick them as often as possible.

It still takes a good 2 years in seems to fully dry out. I do have a good amount of standing dead trees and those are quicker. I do not have any other species on the property so I have to make the is work. It’s great when it’s dry!

My only beef with oak is the dry time. I do, however, appreciate how little ash Madrone makes--I can burn all day for a week and not have to clean out the ashes vs oak which seems to burn longer but boy do the ashes pile up quickly.

I have heard madrone burns good but do not have any. You are right about the oak ashes, I am constantly cleaning the stove out haha. Chickens like the ashes to dust bath in so it works out.

A new to me tree service guy called and asked if I wanted a couple loads of cottonwood. I said sure it burns better than snowballs !! A few nice pieces in there with no rotten stuff or branches with leaves. I messaged him back “thanks come back any time !!” Can’t argue with free wood that comes to your yard even if it brings up the bottom on the BTU/cord charts.

I wish I could send you some logs. We just got a full trailer load that was only 4 logs and they're massive. I think shipping would get a little pricey though...

I have four guys that routinely drop stuff off. I get the stuff no one wants like cottonwood, pine and poplar. It all burns so I say keep it coming !!

There are a few 6' diameter chunks coming next weekend from the same guy from the same trees. He also asked if he could bring other stuff over out of his yard to clean things up. I told him absolutely and am gonna go look what he all has sometime soon. From the sounds of it he has quite a collection of larger stuff.
