I was going through my 394 last night to clean it up and saw a lot of dust on the inside of my air filter holder. The filter is in good shape but I've been milling recently and that makes a lot of fine dust. Should I be worries or is this normal?

Would a tall aftermarket filter with foam catch fine dust better?

That's a lot of fines. Check the filter good for a tear. A green weenie setup would filter better. There may be a K&N that fits the 394 under the cover. Madsens has one that fits the 288 high top set up. It would clog up quicker being oiled though in the air box.

Everything was clamped tight but I'll take a close look for any tears in the filter later today.

@mdavlee would it be a bad idea to run an exposed K&N filter & foam with the plastic cover off while milling?

I've never tried it on a 395. I know people who did cut the cover for a green weenie style

The factories for some types of filters recomend to spay them with some types of oils , are you sure that your filter not belong to this category ?

It's an OEM filter so I don't think it needs oil. But I checked everything out and there are no tear that I can find. I'm 99% sure it was fully seated but with that much dust getting in, it makes you question yourself

I think I'll try a new filter in the hopes that fixes it. OEM filter is about $26 and K&N has options at $33. I've never run a K&N filter on a saw, anything to keep in mind?

This one is supposed to fit inside the high top:

Or should I leave the top cover off and get an oversized one like this?

Might be overkill but I could add foam too. What's the green foam everyone uses? K&N only sells red and gray, any recommendations?

Try grease around the flange

Brand new milling chain on 30" wide hard dry oak so dust was kinda everywhere ;)
Made a bench out of an old sideways stump.
I'll give it a scrub in da tub then oil her up and see what happens.

That filter ain't gonna stop that. A foam and pantyhose wrap may help.

It would be better if it were milled with a carbide chain. It's basically a giant root with tons of soil and sandy grit grown into it.
