The 590 in my collection has only had a exhaust (muffler) mod. added. As others have said b4, this was choked down from the factory.

My CS-500 has the most open factory muffler I've ever seen. No cat, not even a baffle. Just spark screen and deflector. It's not terribly loud, surprisingly. My MS-261 with rotten baffles and intact muffler body is way louder.

It has been an Echo week here. Someone dropped off the John Deere 50V (previous page) to see if I could get it going. I wanted to be thorough so I took it down for for a good cleaning and inspection.

20240213_155556.jpg

Back together and running as it should, just need to replace the starter rope guide and the grommet in the flywheel housing to finish it off.

One thing led to another and I dug out two other JD 50V models I had on the shelves for cleaning, inspection, and reassembly.

One saw will not be a runner (dead coil) but it will still look good in the display. The other saw is now a good runner.

Next up is this JD 60V. I will clean it up, dress up a few bits, and eventually put it into the display. This one was worked pretty hard before I acquired it.

If anyone had a hand guard, muffler guard, or air filter cover/knob, I'd like to make it as original as possible. It may be missing a spark arrester screen as well, one of the 50V saws had a screen and a cover over the outlet.

I think that's John Deere's version of echo cs602vl. I can help with airfilter cover knob. I'll check on others. I may have hand guard but only in white, JD's version came in yellow. The muffler screen and retainer should be same as on 50v. The four shock mounts between engine and lower handle were a weak spot, they frequently broke. They were used on cs602vl, cs702vl, cs750vl, and the JD 60,70, and 80v. If the shock mounts aren't completely messed up I figured out a workaround to help using screws with tall heads meant for other series of echo saws.
I think the cs602 and cs702 (JD60 & 70) were the same except for different pistons and cylinder heads. Some 702vl were called 702evl with electronic ignition. I never tried it but it looks like the the points setup could swap to the electronic setup.

The lower shock mounts on the cs602vl, cs702vl, cs702evl, cs750evl and the John Deere 60v,70v,and 80v often crack or break over time. cs602mounts1.jpg
In my experience they almost always separate between the rubber and the inside metal piece. I've had good luck with replacing the inside mounting screw with one that is used on newer models (like cs440evl), it's has a much longer head and limits movement even if shock mount breaks.
cs602mounts2.jpg
The screws on the right have been replaced by the longer while the left are original.

I hope this is useful,
Fred

60V was rather dirty inside.

20240216_103208.jpg

Much better.

20240216_160012.jpg

The oiler was not working, pulled the plug and there was no line attached. I used my camera/scope to inspect inside the tank and there did not appear to be an strainer in there, maybe a bit of residue from the oil line.

20240216_162853.jpg

I removed and cleaned both check valves, pulled the manual plunger and primed it, and when I pump the manual the oil is coming out the hole circled in red...I presume that should be plugged with a steel ball? The channel to the bar pad is open.

20240216_162844.1.jpg

The AV mounts all look good, reassembly is progressing. The spark could almost be used for flash photography.

The fuel cap on this 60V has the more conventional duckbill valve, no leaks.

The fuel caps on the 50V's all have this arrangement and all leak.

20240216_121206.jpg

As the owner of the first 50V was picking up his saw today I noticed the three fuel caps read 20:1, 40:1, and 50:1...evidently these models were produced over a period of time when oil quality was improving quickly...

He took 50:1...

Happen to be scanning sold chainsaw listings on the bay and noticed this earlier Echo 601S that sold yesterday. I didn't realize the earliest versions (or maybe over-seas versions) used a different decomp set up. What's odd about the one that just sold yesterday is it seams to have both styles. Unless the early button was just left in to fill the hole. First picture is the saw that just sold, second picture showing an early version which also does not have the little flip lever, (in the picture I can't see the actual decomp valve, might just be hidden behind the muffler). Third picture showing a Australian? version (image was from a post by an Aussie on a forum).Screenshot 2024-02-17 at 04-21-37 Vintage Chainsaw Echo 601S for parts or repair!! eBay.png601asmall.jpg461256d7-c8fe-4833-a012-4a14eb8c8ecf.jpg

I finished the 60V today, got a little bold and went ahead and plugged that hole in the oil channel...after a but of running and turning the saw on it's side I got the oiler working. I am quite impressed with Echo design and execution...except of course the congestion in the little air box.

I have a muffler guard coming via eBay, and a knob for the AF coming and hand guard from mowerman. The lever for the compression release does not move the valve very far, but is certainly makes a difference when cranking it over.

Any input on the fuel caps (pictured above) would be appreciated.

This should be the last Echo project for a while, 40V AKA CS-351. It came to me partially disassembled so I am hoping most of the pieces are there. Good news is there are IPL's available on line so I can at least try to figure out how it goes back together.

I will need to find a new gasket for the fuel cap, or any suggestions for a work-around.

All cleaned up and going back together.

On the gas cap gaskets? I wonder if there's anything in the pesticide sprayers parts that might fit and be ok with oil and gasoline?
I'm guessing You've probably already been into any skinny O-rings that you know of.
Seems like any older trimmers with smaller caps may be old and dry, if even still around.
Seems like some older "Weed Eater" brands were similar sized?

Anyone know if an automotive carburetor kit might have something to fit?
Any of you guys working in rebuilding steering gear boxes? Lots of quad rings and stuff in that dept.
Sometimes older faucet valve stems had some flat washers around the big nut.
Maybe the plastic version would do?

You still need the 30V, the 70V, and the 80V for the full John Deere/Echo series.
The gasket for the 40v is an odd one. I'll look tomorrow to see if I have one or a different cap that would work.

Hope the oiler line is okay, a real pain to replace without splitting the cases on the 351's....... ;)

There's actually several other John Deere labeled saws made by Echo besides the the other's you mentioned, 66sv, 65sv, 55ev, 55v, 51sv, 450v, 46ev, 45ev, 35ev, 28, 25ev are some.....there's also the models that started with a "Q" designation...... ;)

Ordered me a Tsumura 16" bar, semi-chisel chain, and used muffler to mod for my new to me CS-400. This is a 2021 model with super low hours, probably just bought for storm cleanup. Look forward to comparing it to my rough and ready 2000's edition which is my favorite saw.

I have never understood the Q series, was that the earliest of the John Deere versions?

I would think Q500F would just be a build code for the specs the saw was made to, same as a code on an automotive build sheet. Were JD saws sold by JD tractor dealers, or were they sold by regular OPE dealers? Or both perhaps? I'm pretty sure the Ford and Massey Ferguson saws were just perks given to tractor buyers and never sold as part of regular inventory. The Ford saws were made by O&R and had a tag instructing the customer to contact O&R for warranty service. I would love to have one as my grandfather bought a new Ford 2000 in 1971, about the time those saws were offered. He never received one of the saws as far as I know.
