Different Caber rings?

Ordered 2 cross piston kits for the Caber rings because the deal was better than buying rings alone.
Obvious difference between the two sets.
Same supplier, same packaging, same part number.
What's the difference?

The darker one?
Any markings to indicate Fcast? The only darker cabers I've used came in a Meteor piston kit for a 460.

Silver with caber stamped on them is what i have.

No markings that I can see.

That black coloring looks similar to what you'd see after heat treating steel to me. Weird that they have the same part number though. Did you try to clean the black coloring off to see if the Caber marking is there?

The few Caber rings I have/used were silver.

The black ones look as if they have been hardened?!

I don't think those dark ones are Caber , any I have got were light in color like OEM rings .
Even the end gaps are different in size and construction .
Maybe someone returned that set after doing a switcheroo ??

Just got non F cabers for my 066.They were gray.The place I got them from said gray non F,black F.They are gray because they are just cast iron.Black one's are more heat treated or chrome????

Maybe @Definitive Dave can opine.

I believe distributors buy Caber rings in bulk in tubes and then package them.

Looks like someone made a faux pas with those black rings.

If I got it right F-Cast are harder rings, they reportedly break in slower, don't seat as fast due to their higher hardness/stiffness.
They should wear slower though, thus provide a longer service life.

I could be wrong though.
Someone feel free to correct me if I am!

Just a theory - the F-cast are carbidic cast iron, which appears grey according to this:

the darker rings may be regular ductile cast iron, which is darker in color:

So maybe it's just the difference between the F-cast rings, and regular Cabers?

+1 for wilhelms post.The problem people see if the rings don't wear as quick the cylinder may.Would rather change rings than cylinder.That's why I asked for non F rings.

Those black ones look identical to the hyway rings. I put a set in a 024 super a while back. Holds 170 psi, they seem like good rings so far. Someone probably messed up packaging is my guess.

Has anyone been able to find out how to tell difference between F and non F?Or are they all F rings now?I got mine in Australia and specified non F which they told me they was but not sure I got what

I just got an oem 52mm stihl piston kit and the rings are black, piston is mahle.
