A shop in Oregon. Phil is the old man's name.
I've seen pictures of those heads. I want to build one and have 3 385 jugs. I need someone as a test bed for reliability on one that's falling full time.Jason's hybrid saw is badass...
I've been to Phil's shop many times and have owned several saws he built. When Chainsaw Jim started his thread about the 390 vs. the 460, the reason I asked if the 390 had come from Phil's is that the son is doing a lot of the saw mods now and his saws aren't as strong as his dad's.
I also discovered that the 390 Chuck has isn't a true two-piece head, but rather it has a machined aluminum "cradle" which fits over the jug with through studs (like a Stihl 075) so that the stock mounting ears don't break off, which has been a recurring problem with the 385/390.
Otherwise, it's just a machined and ported OEM jug, similar to what Randy and many other builders do.

Never seen a close up of the head. Interesting thought to do that for them to keep pressure off the ears.To a non-engine builder, Phil's set-up definitely looks like a two-piece head but what he does is machine the outside of the top of the stock jug to match this "cradle". It's ingenious and took a lot of trial and error.
I also got to see his 3120 that uses some sort of power valve/reed cage set-up with a Tillotson HL 360-A on a pipe.

I bet that is cool. You see the twin carb one Adam was building?
