CLEARCUT meets the 500i

For what it’s worth, on the 500 that I did, stock intake timing was 84, after machine work was 89, and I raised it to 80 with epoxy. It actually seemed to make it rev a little quicker yet even. I couldn’t tell a difference in the cut with a 24 inch bar. Might help the next guy that runs into this same situation

I wonder if it actually got better fuel mileage ported with that intake lowered? Or used the same amount of fuel making more power? More efficient.

I’d put money on it it’s more efficient than stock (as far as number of cuts made). They just have such a flat torque band that I didn’t think it necessary to have it that low

@CLEARCUT you brought up a great point with fuel mileage. A fuel hog hurts productivity at some point. I know that it’s 10-15 minutes down the drain each time I walk back to find the gas can and fuel up. I think there’s a point where fuel usage overrides the power gain in cutting speed. I want a saw to at least have a big fuel and oil tank if it uses a lot of gas, if it has a small tank it better be good on fuel. What I’m saying probably doesn’t matter to a firewood cutter, but to a tree guy or logger it does.

I usually use what I call “crack packs”. Small containers of gas and oil. You can see them in those pics. I use one or two sets depending on the conditions. It really extends your range, and helps to keep your stuff in one spot instead of moving camp a bunch. I also carry something to drink on me in the same way sometimes. Thirst is what always gets me. I don’t mind the 661 fuel economy. It has a good size tank and gets plenty done. My 500 burnt more than the 661 for sure. I find that unusual, and I assume that won’t generally be the case, but I have heard that from a couple other sources, so I don’t know.

I use the same sort of setup when I just need a small amount of fuel, we call them “Jet Packs” lol. 2 canisters of gas and one of oil on a belt, I’ll take a quick pic of my setup tomorrow.

Test data agrees with what you're seeing... 500i drinks more than a 661. 3L/h vs 2.8L/h at max power. Combine that with the 760ml fuel tank on the 500i vs the 860ml on the 661.

That is about what I have always thought, about 15 min run time at max load (about the same run times I got milling with a 044 and 441).

While the 660 may give you less milling time, it cuts faster so you get more done.

When you are milling 20' and 27' Ash for 6.5" beams, you start to pay attention to that crap! Gotta know when to refuel, and better to do it when not in the middle of a cut!

Meh, I don’t really find paper specs to be a accurate representation of real world fuel usage. Here’s a example of why. When we run our 390xp all day we need at least 2-2.5 gallons of fuel to get through the day. When we run a 572 or 441 we can get through a day with about half the gas. The run time might be similar per tank, but the fuel used is actually more with the 390xp. It’s a bigger saw... with a bigger fuel and oil tank. So it’s using more fuel per tank full of runtime.

The 390xp might use a lot of fuel yes, but it’s tolerable because it has a large fuel/oil tank. Run time per tank isn’t bad at all... which the paper specs show. They just don’t show how much fuel your using realistically in a day. I’m guessing the combination of a rather small fuel tank with a high consumption rate is why guys are complaining about the 500i. A slightly larger fuel/oil tank would make this more tolerable.
