Where those guys are from they can run 32’s on 70cc class in the softwood they cut with square chains and 7 pin easily. Where we are from, 80-90cc minimum in hickory and oak with 32/36” bar.

Oh yeah, agreed. Hickroy , oak, beech, locust and maple stumps will test your powerhead, every time.

Lots of 461’s still at the dealers here. I think the 461’s around here are going to be held onto and rebuilt for quite some time. Last of a legendary generation of saws. Even if the new stuff is great, (which I think some of it is, like the 661) there are a lot of guys who refuse them. But if I had one and only one option for a falling saw here, and I had to choose between a 461 and 462, I’d have to choose the 461.

I'm out in Kansas and bought 2 new 461's at the beginning of 2019, like maybe February. My dealer told me that he can't get them anymore, even though they are in his price book and on their part of the Stihl dealer website.

I know I sure am happy with my 461's and I'm glad I got them before they are phased out completely.

I’ll add that I like the 572, but I wish it had a few more ccs. Of course most of us want that on all of them, lol. Stihls have always felt a little more natural to me, but I have enjoyed my Husky’s. Just like anything, you learn to adapt, and I could probably be just as productive with a 572 as a 461.

I know they are NLA, but I've always preferred a 460 to a 461. Have just had several 461s come in with weird heat related/piston related failures.

I think the problems are cured once you mod the muffler and remove the carb limiters, but still. Also, 460s don't have limited coils.

Kind of interesting looks like to me the gasket inside the transfer tunnels is pushing more of a charge on the flywheel side of the cylinder

Everyone keeps going back to the 461....but it's gone from production here.

I ran a few recently. They seem ok. The AV is a bit tougher than the 462 or maybe the 500. I have no time on the 500. Just a few cookie cuts. The 461 was run with a 36" full comp. Someone handed it to me. Stock it's lacking in hardwood stumps. It was ok to buck 25" oak with round file RS chain.

I would be well impressed if a stock 461 could pull let alone oil a 36 stumping hardwoods.

I have a ported 460 that will do it … but the ported 660 does it so much better! I generally keep 28" on the 460.

All day logging in the woods? I think we can all agree that anything can make it for a few cuts or even a tank maybe. But 10 tanks non stop? I just don’t know...

It’s always interesting to me the difference in terrain, timber, cutting techniques and how the saw is setup in different areas. You would get laughed at here with a 372 with a full wrap, big kid spikes and 32” bar. Likewise you would get laughed at out west for using a 390 with a half wrap, small dogs and shorter bar. It always comes down to using the tool for the job... I would adapt with a different area and change my style. Work smarter not harder.

Lots of guys from here go out your way every year to cut on the pipeline rite_of_ways they run 32s on 70 cc class saws and have no problem doing it

Yep out here if you're 70cc or 76cc saw can't pull a 32" bar then it's not much of a saw.
