Hey clearcut, I just used my 500i for first time this weekend cutting timber in the Butte fire burn. Loved the saw but the tiny little dogs are useless on any thing over 2’ so I need some bigger ones. Without reading back through this whole thread, west coast saws makes the 3 points ? Are you liking those? Are there other options yet? And how about maxflow filters? Someone said the 661 will fit? And finally my only other complaint with the 500i is when I’m on the left side of the tree and putting in my undercut it just blows *s-word in my face like crazy. Looks like a lot of it is coming in front of the dog. So when you put bigger dogs on did it reduce the amount of chips and charcoal dust that spray your face?

Can’t say I noticed any difference with the dogs as far as the airflow goes. You do have that plastic air diverter that clips onto the handlebars?
Yes, the 3-point dogs are from WCS. I’m really happy with how they perform. Great dog-in ability while not being overly aggressive. They are a little thin just so you know. I haven’t had any problems though.
Yes, 661 dogs will fit, or any designed for them.

Maybe try the 500i west coast clutch cover. Might flow chips away from you better than the stock little cover?

Some smaller, and some bigger. But on average, a 32 either barely sweeps, or not quite. I’m taking one or two 35’ logs off of these to make things a little easier to handle, as these are getting yarded to a paved road.
I stopped using the bark box here...I’m back to the single port. My saw was rev-bogging when cutting all the brush.

Strange it was "rev bogging" just because of exhaust. You sure it wasn't just hitting the governor and the sound of exhaust made it seem different?

As I do have to make paths a lot of time though vine overgrowth and I have noticed the rev limiter on the 500i where it's meh cleaving through versus my other saws screaming. But not enough to matter at end of day.

So that’s what that extra part was. Ha. Ok. I’ll put that on. What about air filters?
Yeah, sorry. I missed that. I haven’t tried it. I know of some guys who have made it work. I wouldn’t cram it under the stock cover, however. I am aware of at least two saws here that threw a code because they were not getting enough airflow. There’s just not enough room.

Basically what you are saying, I guess. It doesn’t seem to run at full throttle. It hold it back a bit almost seeming to limit with fuel. I don’t know. But I really notice it when I am bucking a tree. When I start my cut on top, and then scribe down the side of the tree, I would really like it to run WOT, but it holds it back a smidge. It’s just how the 500 is, and it takes some getting used to, when you are used to running other saws, I suppose.

I remember years ago seeing the guys up in Canada having an extra bit of flap to divert chips away from the operator.

A few Saw shops here are sending the 500's out with a leather flap on the clutch cover(looks like a cuff from a leather glove)... Works great

I just just about to say that.
It's basically just a piece of leather going around base of side cover like a curtain.

The wrap clutch cover (1142 640 1701) has a bigger rubber flap on it as well. Curious why they're putting leather flaps on instead of that...

Two reasons I know of, one the oem flap brakes off eventually after getting bounced around in crew trucks for a few months(661's do this also) and two, even the larger west coast style 500i covers don't come down as far as most would like.
