Osage is hard but live oak is harder. Wood hardness is determined by the Janka scale. Osage, best I remember, is around 2200 and live oak is 2600 or so. Hickory around 1800, red oak 1200-1400, and yellow pine around 600. I remember a few things from my college forestry days. I do remember Australia having some of the hardest trees in the world with over 5000 on the scale.I think Osage orange is the hardest in North America. Closest thing we have is hophornbeam, known here as ironwood.
We have all of those also including another odd-ball called Hercules Club. It has thorns like locust. I remember my Forestry professor telling us you can chew it for a tooth-ache. Of course I tried it and it worked! Half my mouth was numb.I think Osage orange is the hardest in North America. Closest thing we have is hophornbeam, known here as ironwood.
