But no can't make it into a loop it's rock solid would make good yard art that's about it.

Soak it in white vinegar for a week, spritz it with penetrating oil, and it'll be ready to rock.
One of the early challenges I accepted on my A.S. ‘Challenge Chain’ thread was a seized chain, that looked something like that.

Soaked in ATF and diesel fuel for a few months. Got almost nothing.

I’ve used other methods to remove surface rust, but that does not necessarily penetrate between the links, if the rust has a good hold.

And removing rust does not replace the missing metal.

So, I’m going to pass on that, loop-like assembly.

I have done something like this twice. First was a 3/8lp that I cleaned up and soaked in oil for a few days. Worked great for 2 tanks then broke the cutter. The other one was to far gone.

I would be dumb enough to try to save it if I found it. Who doesn't love free stuff

I have, probably, 100# of junk chains. Just pay freight 🤣
Maybe a few have some life left.
I’m hoping to find a knife maker who can use them.
Junk chain is just that, junk chain - even if I get one or two more grinds out of any of them they are not worth wasting time on.

Once used and never sharpened chain is a completely different thing! ;)

I have a couple pounds of 12.9 grade bolt pieces that are too short to make anything out of.
I was wondering if it is a steel a blacksmith would have interest in. 🤔

The manufacturers would love to make a disposable chain it would create a great recurring revenue stream they just don't know how to do it without creating a dangerous product or just looking like idiots for selling a product that is obviously wasteful and unnecessary.

With a grinder, rehabilitating a ‘junk’ chain to basic cutting status is not a big deal, even if it close to ‘end-of-life’ condition.

Good to have as a ‘sacrificial’ chain for stumps, especially dirty wood, high chance of hitting metal, etc.

Filing one could take more effort. Ad well as if rusty, or if repairs are needed.

I keep a couple “stumpers” around for just the purpose you mention. One is already missing some teeth.

I used to work for a hire company, saws would go out with a new chain on it and a spare new chain. When they came back both chains got thrown in a tub and replaced with new ones.

I used to take the chains as payment from the boss for small things. Stay back 10 mins to finish something or come in 15 early, don't pay me, I'll just take a tub of chains.

If you have a hire company near you see what they do with their chains, most replace them to save the arguments with customers claim you gave them a blunt chain. They will sell of the used ones cheap

Good deal.

Some of the rental / hire companies sell their’s on eBay: ‘Used Once, Never Sharpened’.

Some sharpen and reuse. Some sell or give them away as scrap.

Doesn’t hurt to ask.

I have a meat hook full with end of life "remove one stump and You can retire" chains.

On large stumps it can take two loops, although I can sometimes remove two smaller stumps with just one loop - either way, I get rid of stumps and squeeze every bit of life out of my chains without sacrificing a good work chain.
