I have NO background in the diesels. So I'm just the peanut gallery gawker trying to learn a little here.
thus my questions.

edit: I don't know the service intervals of the engine or it's current usage, etc. So I'm clueless here.

Is there any precedent for having this engines head skimmed or checked for straightness while it's off?
Should the valves, keepers, seals, guides or seats be eyeballed too?

Long story short by the book, yes.

Rebuild/repair of a diesel engine is no different than a gas engine. The fuel systems and lack of a spark system is where they differ.

This is just my opinion I don't think there is enough material on the head to deck it. To me it looks like a throw away head.

You can not machine that head with the pre-cups installed. You either need a very specific head grinder that no automotive machine shop has or remove the pre-cups, machine the head, and then hope you can get them flush again.

I got the engine to rotate 360 degrees . Thats what the owner wants. He spent 600.00$ on a new oil pump. I really don't think there will be any compression on the one cylinder I had to sand down the rust on. Just trying to help out.

Part that scares me is why does it need an oil pump? They dont just fail. Low oil pressure is caused by sloppy fitting bearings.

Im confused. How does a hydro-locked cylinder break an oil pump? Id be more worried about a short rod.

One thing I always do on a head is have it check @ a machine shop,, to see of there are any cracks and check the valves for sealing,,and warpage..
I doubt it would cost $40 bucks, takes em 5 minutes.
Carry on,, great thread.

+1 on the graphited head gasket on Steve's comment. If you had low oil pressure cam bearings are a must besides rods and mains. I've seen guys roll new bearings in the bottom end and still have low oil pressure due to cam bearing wear. And I'm kinda confused too. If it hydro locked you will need to check for a bent connecting rod and also push rods. I'm not trying to be negative here but just trying to help ya out.
