Carving saw and bar recommendations

My wife wants a carved coyote (long story). I brought home a 4' maple round, maybe 22" in diameter. Does a carving bar make that much of a difference? I have a Echo CS-310, Husky 450, and Stihl 201TC in the range of carving. Can I get away with just the carving bar on the 201 or 310 and not need a new sprocket?

If your sprocket is in reasonable shape and is the same pitch as the chain you're using I can't see why not. The carvers I've seen around here just use the small Stihl saws and the pointed carving bar on them. Some people like the 1/4" pitch chains which require a different sprocket. Some of the carving bars don't have a nose sprocket on them so that might not come into play.

Howdy guys! The setup I prefer these days are my Jonsered 2055 with 3/8Lp mini bar for blocking out and a ms 250 with a dime tip carving bar running 1/4" chain. You can only run 1/4" chain on any dime to carving bar. You can however move up to the quarter or toonie size and run LP 3/8..I have never liked a top handle saw for detail they are just a lot harder to steady in the hand. Not as much control as a rear handle.... Oh and thanks for the kind words but I'm just the vessel the Lord supplies the gifts...

even the cheaper little echo rear handles work well for detail. They are like 8# so I loved how light it was but I needed more power so I moved up to the heavier saw...
