Building a Stihl 024avs 026 hybrid.

Following along, always been interested in a 024s/026 build.

Well I am getting ahead of myself just a bit. I didn't get a Lot of pictures because you have to work quickly.


The crankshaft and main bearings were in the freezer next to the stove and left in there for a few hours.


I heated the cases At 350° Once I pulled them out of the oven i pulled the bearings from the freezer and stuck them in the case.

Then I placed the warm case halves with the bearings over a preheated half-inch Rod while I went and got the cold crankshaft.

I don't know if it's the most technical way to do it but the cases went together well.

I've never been around many Stihl's. But these builds have always peaked my interest.

Looks good. I like that way of heating the bearings to accept the crank.

Hone the cylinder before you run that saw. The beaded finish on the plate will scratch a piston up.

Been thinking about where to go with this saw...



Maybe build it as a GTG saw? I was going to give it to my dad for his birthday next month, but I think I'll give him my 028 and try To make this a play saw.

I'm all over the place where I should go with this saw.

So I been degreeing my other Saws hoping to get a better game plan.

I also got tired of my piston stop leaving a tiny mark on the pistons.

I fixed it with a vinyl cap used for wire shelfs.

Here's my hybrid, an 024 AV that now has an 026 top end, new plastic, a new carb, and a new 026 air filter:


It works. I was motivated by the incredible price of a new 024 air filter and worn out 024 plastic. The 024 air filters are getting almost impossible to find. I had to do some machining on the shroud's pins that merge with the case, but that's about it.
