AV was 62cc
Super was 68cc
Magnum was 72cc

IIRC

I do not begin to follow Stihl's numbering and marketing. For instance people regularly believe the ms390 is a bigger and better pro saw than a ms360. And the same with the ms290 and the ms260..

At least with Husqvarna the last two numbers roughly correspond to the cc of the saw and the xp now roughly denotes the pro level.

Even or odd...

Nice to see some "average guy" builds going on here on OPE....Don't see as much of that on the forums it seems these days.

I could bring a few 038's back from the dead by adding aftermarket tanks to the mix...Please give your honest opinion on the Hutzl tank. I buy quite a few things from them, but haven't tried any of the tanks.

Cheers. Will do. I watched a few huztl MS380 builds on YouTube and read a few threads on their MS380 parts being pretty decent quality. The tank was mentioned to be a good pattern part. I will obvs report back. Will have to wait a while as parts from them take an age to get to the UK.

An MS390 is bigger than an MS360, just not better IMHO. Stihl denoted size of most of their saws by Cubic Inches oddly enough.

So an 026 is 2.6 CI, an 036 is 3.6, and an MS390 is 3.9 CI.

038's have to be one of the most overbuilt modern-style saws Stihl ever made. They're heavy from more metal where it counted.

Buddy bought a Brazil Made 038 Mag around 1980 brand new. He was starting his landscaping business at the time and went into his equipment dealer asking for a saw to stump with. The 044 had just come out, but the guy handed him an 038M.

Saw's been through 6-28" bars since that time. He still uses it every season and there's nothing wrong with it. He's never turned either of the carb screws to this date.

Stihl uses C.I, this is odd considering it is a metric country and has been for a long time. Makes sense now though, cheers.

This is why I like the 038, great for a long lasting dependable firewood saw. My old 038M with a light porting, base delete, triple muffler mod and a slight timing advance was a hellava saw. Pretty pissed I sold it last year.

I've got an 038 mag build In the pipeline myself, if you need any parts give me a shout my fellow Brit!
Hey there, we are few and far between over here. @MattG is another fellow Brit... Hmm. Oem fuel and impulse and a Tilly or bing carb?? These are the parts that I still need that I want oem. I can't find for love or money a non Chinese 038 carb in the UK.

Funny you should ask, I just happen to have a spare 038 mag bing that would benefit from a rebuild if you want it

Just a quick one. OEM side casing cover. Nicely refinished courtesy of some nice Ford tractor white...

And another, three thick coats. Should be pretty durable when all the solvent has evaporated from the paint. Lighting is pretty crap so the reflections are a bit off. It looks good although there are a few pin holes. In hindsight I should have filled them with stopper, but I tried to drown them instead.
