Full comp?

I bet full skip 404 would be better to noodle with
I have both. The fullcomp pulls better noodling but the skip feels faster and clears noodles better but I havent time to see the real difference. I like the self feeding of the fullcomp alil better but I have to hold the back of the saw up in the air alil more to clear noodles compared to the skip. I wanna get an old cover and clip the back off

The 390 and 395 are different saws for much different purposes. A 394/5 is a long bar only saw, where the 385/390 is more of a medium bar with power to run larger saw. Just their free speed tune is 1000RPM different, a ported 395 likes around 13-13.5 where a 390 will turn fat and happy much higher. So in small wood where you are running above peak HP RPM the 390 will beat a 395 just because of it's potential for higher RPM. Run a large sprocket or large bar and you'll have completely different results.

It seems to me that focus on speed cutting can be misleading. Are you really going to buck a 20" log into firewood chunks with a 395 when you could do the same thing 1 second slower per cut with a 60cc saw and still be able to lift your beer at the end of the day? So I say, compare them how they are intended to be used. For a 395 it better be 30" of wood or more for me or I'm using something else.

Speed cutting. Yeah. These guys get pretty worked up over a second or two. lol

That cylinder was 99.5 stock.
I'm grinding a pound out of this 394.
Thanks. Lol

Yup, I'll have a pile of chips an 1" high after porting a 394/5. Doesn't make them feel any lighter though.

You can take 10g off a meteor piston safely too. That is a lot of chips on the table!

The guys that send me a saw want it as strong as I can get it so a second or two is a big deal in my world.

A saw That's a second faster in a 10 second cut will feel just like the other one so I have to time everything to be able to tell which is which.

I build saws for work. My customers never ask for a saw that is anywhere near the edge.......they instead want a saw that has a decent gain over stock, and will last. Even the mufflers are a sticking point........not overly loud, and able to pass a visual inspection in many cases. I get where you are though.......I've been there myself. These days I just try to build a consistent performer.

Awesome wood there wow you have some weight in that trailer

Thanks man, lodgepole pine is pretty good Burning wood for around these parts. All the trucks and trailers were loaded to the Max. We camped overnight trip so we worked for two days at it. After it was all said and done we came out of there with seven cord+.

All I know how to build is work saws.
I use very little compression and a damn near stock single port muffler.
The 661 I been playing with is fastest with a slightly larger outlet with a oem screen.
It sounds faster with the big open dual port but it aint.
I have 2 cylinders,one is 102 123 127 77 and right at 200lbs,the other is 95 121 126 83 and 170lbs and you can't tell them apart,cut times are the same.
Makes no sense but every saw I build is faster with less muffler outlet and idles way better. Strange business

I have noticed idle and ease of tuning with smaller muffler mods also.
That's a definate it's the power part that has me confused.
My 066 Shaun ported is the same way.
I can kill any of them by putting a maxflow filter or pull the screen from the muffler.
They run almost as good with no muffler mod period.
I've always thought the opposite.

i think it may be operating temps ,with more opening they run cooler ,but end up with more unburnt fuel being wasted ,different models respond different though ,my 461 runs better opened up ,my 026 runs better choked down .the 661 may be one of them that is happy with less opening .

I started doing less to the mufflers because of noise. I never really noticed a decrease in power due to it either. I'd give up a little in cut speed to keep the noise down though. Yeah........I'm getting old.
That MS 390 you did for me hurts my ears. If I'm cutting with a neighbor, I let him use that saw, and have him block wood on the far side of the swale from me. I've been thinking of putting a stock muffler back on it. Thoughts?
