Best splitting maul no axes

If you took a grinder to the outsides of that and really smoothed out those rough marks, I bet it would cut and split even better.
I am just not a big fan of the heavy head mauls anymore.

It's dull. I keep it that way. My gramps used to tell me never sharpen a maul. This maul never sticks it's a cheap one Wouldn't swear that cleaning it up wouldn't help but I feel like the rough part never contacts wood so I'll just run it as is I guess What do you crack wood with?

I use it for 95% of my stuff. Just blows through with swing speed. Plus I can swing it all day. No back pain after.

I used to keep my mauls with a nice edge on them personally. Doesn't hurt anything.

I've tried a few different axes just never had a ton of luck with them. The wood I have split with axes is easier on a mans back. I cut on hedgerows most of the time which twists the grain up in the wood quite a bit. Usually need to swing a maul with pretty good head speed. It's funny with the fiskars it seems you either love them or hate them. I personally haven't tried the x27 however I tried the shorter handled version. Has it's place for sure but I could swing less times with a maul on certain specimines I certainly won't discredit the fiskars I have not tried but the wood I cut. I need the weight. I would like to try an x27 though hell if it's splitting well no need for a sledge when you could swing an axe

I used to think the same thing as you. I have at least 6 different mauls. Different styles. 5 lb, 6 lb, and 8 lb.
Once I got the Fiskars X27, that's all I use now. The long handle with super fast swing speed goes through most everything. You owe it to yourself to try it. You won't swing anything else after you try it.

I agree it's all about speed and hitting the right spot with the x27. Although if ya don't like it that's what makes us different.

Don't get confused between maul and axe. most of the website reviewed axe instead of maul. It's horrible to describe. Finally, inspiringhomestyle helps me to take the decision. I took Fiskars Iso Core Maul which is 36 in long. I can swing the maul easily with this handle.

It's a matter of personal preference, just like it is with chainsaws!

I have tried a couple mauls, didn't like a single one.

I like my ax with 40" handle, much lighter than a maul, but will still go through knots with a little persuasion.
Hitting a knot a couple times to get it to split isn't a problem either since the ax head isn't too heavy.

Just picked up an isocore maul. Spent an hour or so with it yesterday evening. Has a nice swing to it with a 36" handle. I feel it outsplit my standard hardware stor 8lb maul fairly easily. If the isocore does not split or break the wood on a hard swing, the head will bounce back out in a hurry!!
My son purchased one of the Wilton 8lb mauls. Nice that it is unbreakable..but the extra weight in the handle is very noticible. Might be able to swing these side by side this weekend. Might try to get some video...sounds like there is a bit of grumpy butt ends of fir that need some busting

I've always used a regular hardware store maul, so this was a bit of a treat. Was it the best thing since sliced bread....my panting tells me otherwise. Lol.
...I have gotten to swing a buddies x27...I think in the piece of wood I was in, the x27 may not have enough head width. Definitely could be wrong, but I see spending more time trying to unstick the x27.

I'd be interested to spend a couple hours with a regular maul/x27/ isocore in the same size/type of wood, and see what kind of production difference there would be.

Definitely agree both have their place!! I may have to pick one up in the near future to try out. I'm sure I'd prefer it with less weight through the smaller stuff...be interesting to see on the bigger stuff!!
