Dave got me the parts
I blasted powdered and put it back together
Putting handle hose on is a pita

Agreed, but worth it. That handle style gives it the classy vintage look in my opinion. Last vestige of the Contra styling

Not to be nosy ,but it looks like you have plans for a Remington SL7A? Maybe.
Fantastic restoration of the 090.

I post the pics and if you see something of interest just ask away. I love it when people are interested in saws. That PL-7a is all completed. I can post some nice pics of it in the collection section if you want. We can talk about the major pain it was to get the primer system working and how I made the decals. I have restored in order......Remington PL-5A, PL-7A, Mall 12A, 070, 090, and am in the early stages of a Mall 6 two man saw project. That one is interesting as I am attempting to weld magnesium to repair broken parts and a hole on the transmission.

Speaking of tags, I am at a crossroads with the metal model tags. He's my thoughts, but I would like your guys input also.
The saw is mocked up with the original tags that came on it. They show wear and tear and a little overspray of that black paint from who ever rattle canned this saw. At least they made an effort to mask off the tags. In the pics, the tags are installed, but just with double sided tape. I have the rivets but have not installed those yet. I would like to keep the original tags as they are a unique point of the saw. During the last two years a lot of sellers of NOS tags wouldn't
to Canada, or the shipping was just ridiculous. On guy wanted $45 just to ship them...….that was thru the POST OFFICE!
SO what do you readers think? Do I go with NOS tags? Or do I keep a little hint of the saws history and keep the original ones?

I experimented with using ink and a blotter to paint the raised lettering on the clutch cover and the felling lines around the clutch and recoil covers. It was not as easy to apply as I thought and it took numerous coats to get the deep black look. Also the ink took days to dry. I like the result, but think that it is not a durable option if this was any kind of work or moderate use saw. but for display I think it's fine. The raised letters have a mild slope off of them. It makes it hard to paint them as I always had paint bleed off the edges and it gave it a ratty uneven look. Truth be told, am not that good at intricate close up painting like that, just getting too dang old....LOL

I'd say re-use the recoil tag, if you could clean off the top cover tags (Goof off?), I'd say re-use them as well. Regardless, that's a beautiful saw!

Brought out my old 070 for a comparison. I restored it a little different. It came off of a scrap pile, was in rough shape and I got it for $40 bucks. I decided to just do the minimal of sanding on the cases. I wanted to give it fresh colors, but keep the nicks and chips I figure this saw earned during its working life. There is a chip missing off of the air cleaner corner, 519 is engraved on the back of the fuel tank, and I left a lot of the pitting and scratches this saw acquired over the years. It is a runner but the PTO case half has a crack running thru the bar studs. I assume the bar has caught in a felling incident and it hurt the saw. I found it when applying powder. I have cut with this saw, but very gingerly. It is an early production with the two piece crank. Thought it would be a great way to end off the show with the two of them...

Michaels art supply store carries a selection of oil based paint pens that are fairly durable and I use them for raised lettering on my McCulloch saws.
I'd love to see some SL7A build pics and or finished saw. I have a non primer one to put together and a couple of other guys would love see it also.

They originally had washers under the starter recoil it stopped the vibrating and wearing away of the two touching surfaces.
You can still get the washers off Stihl.

Very interesting. I have no listing for those washers in my 090 090G IPL. do you have any info, like was this on the early or late models. Do you have a part # for the washers? I sure can see that the vibes from the size and stroke from this piston and cylinder that vibrations could over time loosen screws. Are the washers flat and do they have a knurl on them to bite? Really curious now...
Thanks for bringing the point up.

For this model 090AV so Stihl must of brought it in late in the life of the 090 they are usually lost the 1st time the recoil is removed although all 090's could benefit from the washers.
You need to get hold of the latest IPL for this model AV saw when I say latest I mean 2010 ish it has the washers and options like the metal tags or single plastic tag for the newer top covers in it.
I had a copy its long gone but I used to just get the Stihl dealer here to bring up the IPL. Next time I'm at the dealer will get a part number.
I'll pull the cover and get a pic of the washers from memory there is nothing special about them but they work as intended.
