While chatting with a buddy today, a thought occurred to me .... (REALLY odd for a Sunday)

Many of us have done the 'heat the case halves and drop in the frozen bearings' operation.

Has anyone tried dry ice to chill the bearings?
bloody dear over here , if you can buy it

On the subject of bearings, are any folks a bit sick of finding 'made in Taiwan/China on Stihl bearings when doing a replacement. I just did seals.and bearings on a BG86 pro trade blower and yup...Taiwan bearings but put Koto Japanese ones in as replacements. Just bought a new KM kombi with tools, spent close to $2K on it and when putting a speedfeed line head on the trimmer attachment I noticed the $200 tool had made in China on the bearing!:facepalm:Stihl is starting to piz me off with their cost cutting greed.

Taking a whiz outside at -20F, I can personally attest that things positively do shrink in the cold. Been using a heat gun for warming the cases, having mediocre success, I purchased one of those new fangled laser thermometer guns, what a difference using the heat gun, had to warm much longer than I had thought to reach proper temperature. Now everything is falling into place as it should on the first try. Bought it off of Flea Bay for $10-$20.

Propane straight out of the tank squirted on the part to be shrunk.

Use it in a well ventilated area. I.E. the back 40.

I have put the bearings on the crank and froze all of it and I've put the bearings in the case and froze the crank.

If the case is hot enough it will fall together even with room temp bearings.
I use to be afraid of getting things to hot but I got over that after a hundred or so.
I do lots of bearing jobs for people.
I got a new echo case, it has the bearings
And seals installey already should
I use less heat because of the seals already being in?

Yes. You may want to just use some longer bolts to draw the case halves together until the regular bolts will thread instead of using heat. (I would.)

Don't forget the case gasket. :) (I have.)

There's a member on another site one of the guys will mail parts to .It's cheaper even with shipping than what the parts fetch in OZ .
