If your clever in the models you choose, one can have a high performance fleet that is totally stock. Many factory hotrods out there if you know what they are. I love a performance increase if it makes sense and works. I'm in the process of welding up the added gills on a muffler of a ported saw. Its just way too loud to use in residential backyards being gutted with to big exit ports. I blocked off the gills and noise went down a good 50% but could not notice a decrease in power. Target
like 346xp 262 xp

None of my saws are stock, but I've been messing with engines for over 50 years and can't stop myself. Over those years, time and again to my irritation, the EPA has had a significant influence on the performance of many engines, chainsaws included.

I've found it pleasantly surprising what a SENSIBLE muffler mod, re-jetting the carb and perhaps dialing in the ignition timing will do to a stock EPA approved chainsaw. It really doesn't cost me anything but my time, but it is time well spent.

Absolutely the chain is critical to cutting performance .
Hope you're passing that knowledge around Thomas , getting good at filing is a challenge that takes a lot of practice .
I'm OK at it but not nearly as good at it as I would like to be , I wear glasses now and find I can't focus well if the lighting conditions aren't good .
my free hand no guides just a good file and years of doing it.

I was completely satisfied with stock saws until after reading so much about ported saws i finally had to have one. Now to scratch my itch it must be ported. If you hate more power and louder mufflers and better throttle response then stick with your stock saws. As for me, let'er rip tater chip! Ported!

Never met a power saw I didn't like, just like some better at the right time is all. I have just as much fun with my stock saws as my modded one. Then there are the old timer saws, I probably get the biggest kick out of running them. Some new, some old, some down right antiquated but all fun. I'm blessed with having an array of saws from 40 to 90 cc's. So I can just pick one big enough for the wood I'm cutting and pure happiness follows.

@Heffalump should probably post a video of his, or his wives stock 034 super. I ran that thing at the gtg this summer and couldn't believe it was a stock saw.
:D
Wish I'd have known earlier. I burned 2 tanks through it on the woodpile last week. That saw is a gem. Matter of fact, we let a friend and his wife borrow my 044 and Mrs. Heffalump's 034S two weeks ago. Gave them the saws, gallon of my fuel mix, 1/2 gallon of my oil, my field bag, and about a 45 minute lesson on how not to f--k up our chainsaws. They ran hard all afternoon and reported back that they thought the 034S was much easier to handle and had plenty of power, but felt the 044 was easier to start.....the 034S was so hard to pull over...... ;)

@Chainsaw Jim , two questions:
  1. Are you taking any port work? I have an 044 and maybe a Jreds 80/90 that could use a little more oomph.
  2. What would it cost to commission one of those Husqy 357 Chainasaurus' you brought to the GTG in June?

What is a good price for a new 550?

Was $450 PHO and 545 was $375 PHO ;) add $25 shipping back then.

545 ran equal to NE 346 with 3/8 on both. 550 was just a tad ahead. All stock and the 550 545 was new and 346 was broke in.
