Apparently I hung a ring. I'm not sure how. New OEM piston on a cleaned up jug. No port work.

Can I clean it back up, and smooth the bevel around the transfer and exhaust where it is damaged?

The ring was in 3 pieces when I pulled the jug. Possibly 1 piece took a trip around?

Looks like it's one for the shelf of horrors.

I got a chance to pull the piston off. The circlips were intact. I think the bottom ring broke somehow. Anything to look out for when I reassemble? What's the best way to get the bits of broken ring out of the crankcase?

Big end bearing looks ok. The wrist bearing is in perfect shape. I will take a closer look tomorrow when I go to reassemble.

It can be hard to see a missing needle
It looks like it ate something from somewhere.

It definitely ate something. My gut says I somehow broke a ring, because it was in pieces when I tore it down, but how? I will inspect the big end to be sure. If a needle is missing, I have my answer.

I'm wondering if a chunk of bearing or cage let loose and caused the piston to bind enough to hang up like that.
