I'm thinking you broke the ring somehow in assembly. It's happened to me.

I've got a ring end in a port before and had a hell of a time.

On a 661 you better make sure and keep the cylinder straight or catch hell.

Thanks everyone. I cleaned up my spare jug and fortunately had another new OEM piston here, so it's back together. Squish is .0195 without a gasket, so I'm hoping to make a good runner out of it.

Lesson learned: be really really careful when putting rings in. I am guessing that one of the rings wasn't quite in the right spot last time, and that is what did it in.
