I tried the krylon stuff on my 288. Even found it in husqvarna orange. Its starting to peel priory good. But it’s also prolong the primer off with it, so I’m blaming it on my piss poor prep producing a pitiful product.

Magnesium prep is difficult, holds onto a lot of oil and stuff because it’s so porous. Did you use etching primer? Mine hasn’t peeled off, just not as durable as I’d hoped.

No etching primer. Just a regular metal primer. And prep was a brake clean bath. I didn’t split the half’s. It was my first time trying a saw rebuild. If i do it again I will do a low temp long time “bake” to get the oil out of the pores.

Absolutely man. Etch primer will definitely help the next time around. Can be easily found at Walmart or a hardware store, and is needed for proper adhesion to aluminum and magnesium.

Well I decided not to paint it since factory paint was decent and I have old plastics that came with it. Got crankcase together with new nachi bearings tonite.






Cleaned the cylinder up earlier today.





Meteor piston to go in it and waiting for new pin bearing from DDave that should be here via USPS tomorrow. @dustinwilt68 will have some springs and rubbers for the front coming in sometime in the near future for it. Carb has been cleaned and rebuilt, new fuel line and seals should round it out nicely.

That’s why I’m still waiting on it lol. Most all threads I read stated use oem pin bearing no matter the saw build or maker.
Got muffler painted, two coats bracket has one so far will throw in shop toaster over later to get them cured. Have my toddlers today as mom and oldest daughter are gone today.

Got bearing new o ring for oil pump and my foredom in the mail today. Waiting for youngest little ones nap time and will take the older one to the shop with me and get rolling on this thing again. Per Randy’s advice I will be advancing timing 4 degrees and eventually widen exhaust and intake, but right now the only thing I’m going to do is set squish. Will play w the foredom on some messed up concrete saw cylinders in the mean time.

Had to work inside the house today. Cylinder and piston on, ignition back together muffler and intake tract back together. Will get new decomp valve in my next parts shipment.

Squish is .032 couldn’t get any closer with what I have on hand pretty much done until more parts arrive. I’m a Little bummed.

Had to work inside the house today. Cylinder and piston on, ignition back together muffler and intake tract back together. Will get new decomp valve in my next parts shipment.

Squish is .032 couldn’t get any closer with what I have on hand pretty much done until more parts arrive. I’m a Little bummed.

Thats looking great. I love 288's, they're so easy to work on and are strong runners. My newest saw is a stock 390 (2014) and my stock 29 year old 288 will run with it. That says something for the 288 enginering. My 288 is in Marshall North Carolina now so the 390 will be sucking hind tit soon lol.

Yes sir I did. The top cover already had the sticker so I figured why not lol. It surprised the heck out of me that it only took 3 days to get there from Montana.

Finally got my Chinese muffler after waiting a month. Found a piece of pipe roughly the same diameter as the one on the muffler (.600") and used my Dremel to open up the case. I've never brazed anything in my life but my mig welder is out of commission so that's what I had at my disposal. It's not super pretty but there are no holes in it so I'm fine with it. Couple coats of stove bright and back on she went. The bolt holes on the muffler were perfect sized which was something I've read is not always the case. I'll test and tune it tomorrow.

Dont be too bummed about the squish, it will still pump up to about 185psi at .032.

Exactly. It will run perfectly fine at 045, let alone 032. As do many other saws. It's easy to get caught up in all the squish and porting and speed threads. At the end of the day the saw has to cut wood, not impress strangers on the internet.
