Can I ask a couple of 181 questions here?
1. Early models had 2 different size crank bearings correct? Is there a way to tell with out splitting the case?
2. It's a thin ring, They are NLA, Has decent compression, run it or save it
3. Any fitment issues with late model covers or case if the crank bearings are same size?

If your saw still has the silver tag and readable it'll have the year of manufacture on it. I'm not sure but I think 84 was first year for the 181 which had different side crank bearings. I've had several 85's and they're same side crank bearings as 281/288. Cant remember the bearing number right now. Someone here will correct me if I'm wrong and will have the bearing numbers too.

281/288 use 6203 bearings. Not sure on the early 181’s, @Onan18 will likely know

Any one have good results with After Market ignitions on these? Have two that act like they go lean after a couple of tanks.....but pass vac tests. Has to be either ignition or compression, since compression is in the 140 range.....ignition most likely. So looking at options.

Howdy Walt.

I’ve never tried AM on these. No other possibilities such as fuel filter?

The early 181s had a 6202 C3 on the flywheel side and a 6203 C3 on the PTO side. As far as I know the later cranks that use 6203 C3s on both sides will fit in any 281/288 case and everything else is the same. For the thin ring piston yes the rings are NLA but sometimes you can luck out and get a N.O.S. set from Ebay. If all else fails just get a Meteor 281 piston, won't be a thin ring but it will run.

I have this aftermarket secondary from Turkey, and it seems to run a bit hotter than the last one I used. In fact, I just have to touch my tachometer to it to get a solid reading(it's the type you wind about the wiring). So either it's a hot spark or it's very thin insulation...

ETA the primary coil is a VEC from the Greek guys.
