Everything is compared to a 200t, they seem to fall apart and go back together on their own. I think the 540 is mostly just different, not really that bad.

True.

#1 because it is the standard to which all top handles must bow.
#2 it takes a xhit ton of abuse before they NEED to come apart.
#3 they will have earned their weight in gold before #2 occurs.

I wonder whether the AT carb has an adjustment screw under a Welch plug like the 550xp does? To kinda give a lil L-speed adjustment.

If anything like the track record of a 550, you may have a bad o-ring Andy.

Cheers Jeremy, read about them before, this should have been sorted by the dealer but not sure what the deal is as it's been back several times, all I know is the boss bought it new as it was cheap as chips and he can't be arsed sending it back again and again. Though it hasn't been used much, its spent a fair bit of time in a toolbox with other saws so looks pretty tatty but mechanically it's honestly done nothing

Not over impressed with dealers around here, the stihl main dealer "repaired" a 201t that was dropped in the river, it still wouldn't run right, the first things I found in it was a dirty fuel filter, tank vent blocked inside with mud and a mangled av spring, never mind worn rings, bad carb, crud in the fuel lines blah blah balh, good "repair" for sure...

Its horrid in some areas (most) with poor dealers. Many buy a new product with warranty in mind believing they've made a safe bet. Too many go through hell as a result. I hate new saw prices here and the warranty that comes with them.

You're not wrong there, that's nice!

Picked it up from a fellow member here. The story is that it came out of a sawmill and had 1 tank run through it with outboard motor oil in the mix and ended up scored. I have seven 540/8800's but this is the first one I have seen with a full wrap.

I run my own business, but also work as a groundie for a fellow contractor a bit. He bought one to replace his aging 200T. He keeps taking the 200T up the tree with him, so I get to use his 540T to break up the stuff that's too big to drag on the ground; on the ground, it's a pretty good saw ON A COOL DAY. But we get a lot of 40C+ days in summer here. To make a long story short, it's now back getting warranty repairs (laptop I'm guessing?) as it died today from the heat while he was using it to stump cut some pencil pines (42C today, I was working elsewhere). As in, it no go.

My old school, old tech Echo 360TES came to the rescue! (the 200T is still running strong too!)

I like my chips (fries) for dinner, not in a saw!

I've never worked on one but i've heard its a real PITA .
It is. Check the impulse line it is on the fuel cape side. Hard to see but have seen them half pulled off, pinched, ECT. They are a bear to strip but almost easier to do a pressure vac test.
Have the dealer give you the print out of the diagnostic tests when they hooked it up. It can code an air leak and help get to the bottom faster.

Compression test will most likely reveal the problem.... I had one that would not idle... ran perfect part throttle and up...
was very surprised to find about 80psi...

they are a bit of a puzzle the first time around, more so if it was apart when you got it..

edit: just saw this is an old thread... any update on what was found?
