I'd throw a piston in that jug and run it for R&D. It might eat rings a little faster and be slightly low on compression but you'll still get to make some adjustments and know exactly where you want the new one to be. It will only cost you a piston, meteor is good option or you can go with the cheaper Hyway from CCC, but you may want to grab caber rings for it.

I agree completely.

I like this counsel... I already have the meteor piston and caber rings since that was what I was working skirt width measurements with. It buys me a little time to get the new cylinder kit was well.

Thank you!

Got it back together... It sounds good to me and takes a tune well. I need to find some wood.

Obligatory pictures...

Muffler mod w/288 deflector, welded on, and a trimmed down screen from a countervibe muffler.

A little scrubbing and Dawn, it’s like new (maybe like 75% new). Notice the decomp button is gone. The decomp comp was trash which certainly caused the cylinder scoring near the decomp port. I had a plug and used it. I’ll pick up another decomp with my next parts order

Clutch side (and a blatant cameo by Permatex blue).

So many people throw away filters. Little elbow grease, water and dish soap does it most of the time. Nice job sir.

I picked-up another 395xp for a good price. It had been dropped with somewhat light hours.

Brazilian build with a Mahle cylinder. Piston was scored and the timing numbers are with a Meteor piston.

Exhaust: 101
Intake: 76
Transfers: 124
Squish: 0.021 - 0.029” (no gasket)

Used @Moparmyway ’s data as a starting point.

This is just a ‘gasket delete and grind’ build for my tree service. Picked the saw up for $250 this week, running strong but missing half the covers.

Her are a few photos when the ports were (very) roughed in. Forgot to take pictures of the final product. As usual.
