So Bret, knowing that you also build a mean A$$ 660, and that you have also played with a 661, what is your take on them?

So Jason, Al, Brett (or anyone else) I keep thinking about those winged KS pistons and wonder if it is possible they help the cylinder perform better.

My thinking is that a piston skirt does not actually seal a port (like piston rings), but that those wings may provide a little additional flow resistance that improves performance.

Anyone think there may be something to that?

This pic shows why I did not use my replacement piston in 044#1, no wings, and the skirt was a hair shorter.

In no way would resistance to flow help improve performance. The whole premise of porting is based on improving flow.

I think you are missing what I am saying. There is a reason you don't open the ports wider than the skirt, but the blockage from the skirt does not provide a 100% seal. If the wings help improve the seal, they will improve performance.

The intake opens when it clears the skirt, and the skirt blocks the exhaust port when the piston is at TDC, preventing fuel from just leaving the cylinder.

My take on the winged pistons is just a little better durability over the long haul...they provide more support so you don't get as much piston wear on the intake..how much I don't know...I havnt had any probs with aftermarket pistons either

I was just thinking it would act as a wider skirt, and was wondering if anyone every checked where they are located at TDC. Perhaps the align over the intake at BDC and over the exhaust at TDC.

I may be absolutely, completely, and totally wrong, but is was a thought that I had.

I think we need Redbull 660 to test a winged & non winged piston in the same jug, with timed cuts, to see if it makes any difference!!!!!!
