Wow, over a pound difference between our scales. Anything about the 395 that makes it heavier than a 394? I weighed mine with the big spikes, but who knows how accurate the scale is.
That's prior to the high top filter conversion and it does have the big spikes too.

awol how are your 390xp's holding up are you doing anything to beef up bottom ends on them?
I've had to replace two cranks, but that was from ham-fisted operators prying to hard with a pinched chain.

Here is what seems to happen before any bottom issues. This saw had been in the woods for less than two weeks when it happened; it had a documented 33 gallons of 20:1 mix run through it in that short amount of time.

So what makes a 390 prone to bottom end failure? Since I don't own one I'd like to hear what some of the builders have actually seen that substantiates this reputation.

Big end let's go. 50:1 and a lot of heat or too many rpm does it. I've changed about 7 or 8 in the past few years. They kill cranks and the 046/066 wear the bearing pockets out and the case is junk.

Thanks for the response Mike. So when you mod a 390 what do you consider a safe "in the wood" RPM? Or even simpler; where do you no load tune a modded 390? Thanks

It was being transported under the arch on a skidder; operator didn't know it was there.

Not without causing a lot of butt-hurt. You know I don't like to cause trouble!

Under 14k is what I would stay for a work saw.
I usually tune my ported 357 and 372 to about that despite the fact that both will run 14.5+ and still 4-stroke a bit. I like them to clean up in the cut. I've also switched to 32:1 for a bit more protection since they are running a bit faster than stock.

Wonder if changing to 32:1 helps a high strung 390?

32:1 for sure. I've had 390s up to 15k but that was short bars and only playing.

Like my bother @RIDE-RED 350r I keep my woods ported saws (357 & 372) tuned at just under 14k unless I'm playing around and trying to prove something;). I also run 32:1 now, I submitted to my bro on that one...lol.
Sounds to me like if you don't have unreasonable expectations (i.e. Keeping the tune at 14.5k+) a 390 "should" last as long as any other saw out there with maintenance and a safe tune.

What about a 390 compared to the 288?
That's like comparing an old shovel head hard tail to an Evo Softail....
A 390 is smoother gentler on you all day but the 288 sure will make you smiley faced all day...just not with the saw in yer hands ....all day long.
For me nothing sounds like an idling 288xp when ported....that ping.ping..pop pop ping ping is wayyyy cool..

And that's coming from a Stihl guy.
