Which many of us think makes them super sucky...specially when it comes to doin anything related to the chain...or bar....IMO outboard clutches blow when it comes to "servicing"

But hey....the balancing thing....woah....that really makes the super sucky go away....:campeon:

You forgot to mention their sucky chain tensioner.

It's kinda funny that this topic came up right now; I sent a brand new 390 to Wisconsin this week, for use as a full time milling saw. And its not the first.

Also one of my steady customers runs three of my 395's as falling saws, but last night dropped off a new 390 for a tune and muff mod. I told him If could have my way with it for a week, he will retire the 395's so we'll see how it develops!
I love my 390xp Allen. Cant find anything to not like about it with 404 noodling

Yeah, 404 works best on 'em. Eric had to go with 404 on his 390's I did for him 'cause they kept stretching the 3/8 before it was half wore out.
I ran 3/8 square on mine blocking alil bit and it was mean as heck but noodling the .404 pulls all the usable torque out of thoso bad boys!!

Interesting, I checked my Jmssaws '98 394xp, it's got a walbro on it. The '96 has a tilly. Wonder what the real difference is between the two ?

:facepalm:Whoops my bad, they both have walbros, but believe one is epa wj70(98) and other is non epa wj39(96). Did a bit more research and seen that different tank vents were used as well (epa and non epa) I bet the epa parts are more restrictive in some way. I think only 395 has tillotson.

Heard the 390xp doesn't have a strong bottom end, bearing failures bearings spinning in cases not the most durable saw.... So for milling use 394/395xp all the way! tough saws and stronger torque than the 390xp anyways so its a win win for milling applications.

Just luv my tree90.
Lil less weight n much more compact than a 394-5.
I dont mill, dont run a bar longer than 24 much, 32-36" when i need to.
Its mah noodle monster.14895177370511696067330.jpgI feel .404 creates too much torque on the end of the crankshaft. Add in the inboard clutch which holds in heat, thats a formula for disaster.
I run 72JGX (SKIP TOOTH) fer noodling, evacuates them long shreds without binding or clogging up. Specially with me modded clutch cover.

I wise monkey once told me he would rather have a 461 over a 390, said he sees more problems with the 390 as far as durability goes, 394 all the way for me, no hesitation, milling might be the hardest thing there is on a saw.

I think the durability problems go hand in hand w/my previous post.
I have had no problamo whatsoever.
But then I dont push it beyond, I run rich n fat, and a chain that i feel is best for the job.
390 is 2#s lighter than a 394, that adds up after a few hrs of use.

13.5cc's more than a 461, stock tree90 is a saw that is already pushed from the factory to extremes.
A niche saw if you will,
