Hi all, long time since posting on here.

I have a very very tidy 346xp that has fallen into my hands..

I'm in my mind thinking there are some upgrades on the carb that I could do.

I vaguely remember a 357xp hda 198 will fit with a 357 filter and holder.

Does this work with the primer? Or does that simply need capping?

Thanks in advance.

Zama el42 is what I always liked. With the 357 intake set up of course. Used to get oe Zama carbs for 25-30 bucks. Now they’re 80-100. Such is life these days.

My ported 346s with hda199s scooted. Having the bigger filter setup is great too. It seems like I remember someone I trust saying the intake rubber isn't that big of an upgrade, but I may not be remembering right. I've tried the setup on a stock or a farmer'd 346 and didn't feel like the juice was worth the squeeze. I had one actually not fit. The linkages just didn't work smoothly. I cannot recall the carb though and with all of the junk I keep around it could have been a one off.

They’re so close that the one with the sharp chain wins. Out at the MN GTG I got my ass handed to me by an XS 2152 with the original small carb against my 2153 with the bigger carb.

Still find this hard to believe. Think it was more chain than saw, but it did happen

I've had several ported saws with both carb set ups and, the 199's don't make enough difference for the trouble.

Maybe it depends on how it was ported; Mine does make a difference. Both saws (stock carb v 199 carb) haul the mail, but the 199 carb saw is stupid strong for a 50cc; and my regular carb 346 ain't no slouch.

If you ever decide to get rid of the red one I’d like the opportunity to buy it back

I'm on route to el42 with my 353. It is going to get mid-prized Winzor CP kit too. Primer pump really seems to work well with Tygon hoses. I'd imagine it will be second pull saw from now on.

After extensive testing on my NE346 with a muff mod, I've swapped from the zama to the Hda 199 several times, no different in cut time... I will state a fact that the saw is quicker to rev with the hda 199, probably because it's equipped with an accelerator pump.

Definitely don’t bother on a stock saw.
My ported OE gained a bit from the 199 carb. I’ve ported a bunch of NEs with the EL42 a few with the 191/8/9. It matters how you port them. Don’t bother with a 357 boot. It’s basically the same as 346. Just ditch the support ring. If you go to the bigger carb you have to do the bigger air horn and filter. That part might be where most of the gains are.
