Bearings are 6202 C3, Gaskets and seals are all still available, your top end choices are limited to used, 61 (open port), or 272 (closed port) if staying OEM.

Joe
I might know someone with that has 266 stuff.

If I went the 272 route, what else needs to be changed?

What are my top end choices?
I believe the easiest is to stay with 266 jug. If you switch to 272 you will run into top cover fitment issues. The front screw on flwheel side will not align with a 268/272 top cover and if you try to use 266 top cover there is clearance issue. I'm not expert what combinations will work and what wont. @SawTroll has a bunch of info on this subject. Maybe he can help

You would need the 272 intake block, carb screws, and gaskets for sure, may need different muffler bolts. The jug will fit under the top cover but it is tight.

266 is two piece ignition. A top cover from a one piece ignition saw (268/272) won't fit. A 266 jug is as good as any and you avoid all these problems

I agree with this statement!!!

I'm just building a 266 at the moment as well.....OEM cylinders can still be had and Meteor pistons are readily available....Everything else is easy to come by including OEM gasket sets.

They react just as well to porting as a 288 does as well! :)

I don't know a "bunch", but enough to say you are on the right track. To fit a 272xp top end also means fitting a 272xp carb and intake as well, unless you are able to modify the existing ones to work with that top end. If the 266 is an about mid 1985 or later the carb size itself isn't an issue, but it is with the older ones, that has the smaller HS-163 carb.

The top cover issue is there anyway, simply because the spark plug is at a different angle on the cylinders.

The 266xp was made at least until 1997 - without checking, I doubt the ignition was two piece all the time?

Jeremy I think I have a good cylinder and piston, and maybe some other parts too.

Recoil says 266xp, case tag says 268xpg. So I'm not sure. But it's a clean closed port 50mm cylinder and piston.

I have never seen a one piece ignition 266 and I have seen A LOT!.... I'm sure all 266's were two piece ignition!...I don't think the 266 was offered in North America as late as you say either, Niko....Maybe other markets??

Sounds like a 268. If so upgrade to 272 should be simple.

You may be right Niko, but I've never seen one that wasn't.

Likely not in North America, but it may well have happened on other markets.

I'm not sure how the late TOMOS made ones were.
