My personal favorite saw, but has limitations. Handling/balance if you are running under a 40" bar, you need to be strong ;)

Hands down my favorite milling saw, even prefer to my work horse "ported" 3120's. But due to parts, it's my "fun" not production saw.

Great docking saw for mill ends (same as the ct).

Basically it is not a saw for - cookie cutting pine munching pansies.:asz:

It's a saw for generations past, before we were spoilt.

When I would put a longer bar on a saw to quarter up and rip cut big elm logs for firewood cutters. I would grab a stock 084 or stock 3120 over the ported 166. Ported 084 it wasnt even close.
One of my ported 084's went on making a living ripping hardwoods with 60" bar.
We all have our likes and dislikes and opinions. This was mine and stick to it.

Lee owns the full wrap handle on the one saw now. I couldnt stand how skinny they were. Liked the fatter half wraps so we traded.

3120's didnt make the big cc photo shoot back then.

Nothing wrong with having an opinion/prefference ;)

Damn good reason, that the 3120 doesn't make the list. At least not from the factory. At least ours aren't neutered from factory to the same extent. Still remember going to mill this big jarrah burl up (35-40" wide) and thinking "I'll eat this alive now" and being totally disappointed compared to using a solo 690. While our 3120 have unlimited coils, mine with a stock muffler and massively oversized fixed jet (1.25 compared to 1.16(?) You guys have) bogged the saw down so bad it might aswell had a limited coil..)

On a Janka, jarrah is around 1900, while depending on elm variety 800-1500).

For milling my stuff, and it ain't 20" wide pine. Used all these and prefer in this order.

166
3120 worked
084 worked
088 & 880 worked
084
088 & 880
Stock 3120

I have used other saws, but have not put them in to keep things simple.

It horse for courses and what works for you.

But most important off all is, the 166 sounds the best ;)

Perhaps your ported 166 was a turd?

It wasnt, that is the funny part now that you said it. Guess where that put the stock 166 at now. ;)

Just compared to my ported 084's no contest and the handling of the big saws I preferred my 084's.

Only thing the 166 had going for it was the stroke and I know folks with 60mm and 66mm tops on them over the stock 56mm tops. ;)

Cutting with long bars like 6' yeh maybe. But here with our shorter bars and hardwoods.

Another 166 owner said. A very nice and highly collectable saw , I have 166 Dolmar, I love it but it's slow as crap.

I do love the sound of them at idle. Best I ever heard. Like a big cam.

Video when I was adjusting idle on ported 190psi muffler modded one.

It was far from being a turd .I ran the piped 166 at Chardon .Didn't do that good but it was the operator not the saw.Still in all I too would take an 084 over a 166 .More so a personal preference than anything .

Al above ran both of my 166. If I remember right.

Hey Al. You retired yet? :beer-toast1:
I went to my retirement seminar this week. So close now. :D
