So I have a basket case 066 come in, early 8mm crank saw. Scored and in sad shape... I said sure.

So I have never split a Stahl chain saw...only TS saws. Which way do the dowel pins tap? Towards clutch or towards flywheel?

Also what gasket set am I hunting? I think most on eBay are for late 066/MS660S.

You can just split them, no need to worry about the dowels.

Always heard you should tap them one way or the other to avoid them hanging up as you split the cases.
Always best to drive them down into the flywheel side case before applying the puller just in case the halves do not separate evenly, the dowels will hang up and the case could be warped otherwise. You need the earlier gasket set, same one a 064 takes, the oil tank is shorter on the early 066 saws.

I've never done anything to the dowels.
I don't split them with a puller though

When pulling the cases apart with the pullers that attach to the bar studs they don`t always pull apart evenly, I have seen a few cases that had the area around the dowel pins split from this uneven separation when the pins were left in. Stihl factory manuals will specify driving the pins down for case separation so I have done so on every Stihl I have split, that would likely be more than 50 cases, probably more than that of all sizes of Stihl models.

Like I said,i don't use a puller so I don't drive the dowels down.

Most of the time I blow the passages to the dowels out with compressed air and soak them in Kroil alil while and split cases and leave the dowels in place

Ok.. I popped them out. Early 8mm crank 066 cases aren't readily available like later ones. I used a Husky style splitter like always with a little heat added for good measure.

I was originally going to just do seals and I am glad I split it. This is what I found:

I remember Jacob J saying they did it in 046 for a while but didn't remember the 1122 getting them
I find it funny... everyone said the Husky saws with plastic cages were a horrible idea and such... Stihl tried it first and shielded them.

Meh.. I am going to do it up how I want.

I don't think I've seen one that didn't have plastic cages.
I've seen a few shielded

Question, are the short 066 cases as light weight as the 064??? Or, are they lighter than the other 066/660 cases???

I know someone who says he has several "short" cases, but is not sure if they are 064 or 066. Any good way to tell the difference???

Thanks.

From the best of my knowledge (which isn't much) the easiest way to tell the difference between the 064 cases and the early short case 066 is to look at the oil pump set up. The 064 uses an oil tube and the 066 has an oil passage cast into the case
