I think you probably have a really high exhaust because of the pipe. As such, you probably are not trapping enough volume to drive the compression higher. The pipe stuffs the charge back in and will have much higher compression when running.

So, I would set the squish at .025" by making a custom gasket. Make sure the cylinder is lubed up with some assembly oil. Gas the tank up full. Give it a shot of ether and give it hell trying to start it.

If you want to set yourself up for success, slowly rotate to just past TDC. Then you will be able to squirt the ether into the case, and have the exhaust/transfer stroke working in your favor to help give your pull a little more momentum and atomize that ether So it will pop off.

back in the AC for the day, I will put a standard clutch cover on with some other stock stuff to try to fire it off tomorrow afternoon after packaging.
I am leaning towards a base gasket.
if it gives you an idea of the stoutness this thing seems to have.
Pulling ugly betty over is like arm wrestling an infant compared to trying to get the rope on this one out halfway on a drop start and setting on the ground with both feet holding it down I cant pull the rope out halfway with both hands.
Not kidding even a little.

It will probably be 250+ on compression, it's a race saw made for big wood.

I am quite curious where the ports are,I don't think it will have a high exhaust but I could be wrong.

Try a different starter, I have one that binds up for some reason and makes it difficult to get a full pull. I swapped it with another starter and it made a huge difference, and this is on a 200 psi 346.

It may be ready for methanol and nitro if the compression is that high? Measure the chamber in fluid cc. That will give us an idea of compression.

So it gets to 135 and then it feels locked up?

Any chance your bearings are toast Dave?

What would cause a mechanical lockup only under compression? Could the crank be cracked and flexing only under compression?

I have never had a issue getting a comp reading. If I can pull it with a plug I can pull it with a gauge. Granted I only got one at 225#. I suppose I got something to learn or this I'm has something wrong with it.

oh it's no easier with a plug believe me :)
I eyeballed the hell out of the crank and big end bearing as best I could without splitting the case.
Bearings feel smooth and are newer OEM with shields.
If a case gasket and stock ignition stuff doesn't lead me down the right path I will split this puppy and redo it all.

most of the nice ones are identical except branding from what I have seen
I got mine at Sears in a little kit with a bunch of adapters that I mostly never need for about $60.00
I bought this one today at autozone. I hope it works good the main reason I bought it was because it came with the 10mm adapter. It was $40.

not what I would have picked that looks very low quality, though looks aren't what makes a tool work of course, save your receipt and make sure there is a good Schrader valve in the tip
