So I went and built a 029. I used a cross 039 top end with the popup piston they sell. It is far from stock exh and intake widened, transfers evened and opened, timing advance and muffler is pretty much wide open. The saw runs out of carb how it is. I was planning on trying a 044 carb. I have read that they work well on modified 039's. But does anyone know of a better flowing air filter set up? I have a mesh one on the saw but there has to be a better option.

Maybe put some frogskizz on the cover. I've wanted to put a Vstack and a green wenner on one of mine but you need the AF cover on to hold down the control leaver.

Some hackery might ensue to get it to work

You have to build your own - it is a lot of work. The nylon mesh filter will probably work just fine (better than the flock filter for breathing). Lots of saws have used the nylon mesh filters for years and not had any problems.

EDIT: The 029 carb can be modded, but that is a lot of work (blocking the EPA circuit, drilling the auxiliary jet, drilling the transition holes, drilling a hole to feed the low speed circuit) . The 044 carb is an easy swap.
