Yeap what 5000+ said.if its been switched to an electronic module it may have *s-word the bed.if the coil has been replaced it may not match up with the flywheel.

Okay, I'm a dummy... I didn't notice the extra wire going behind the flywheel when I was cleaning the pound of crap from behind the starter... I pulled the flywheel and removed the points and condenser. I was going to just clean the points (they REALLY needed it), but the horrible design with the eccentric on the flywheel made me decide to ditch them for a better method. I had a 029 coil lying around and bolted it up. Fueled it up and pulled it twice and it runs like a new one. Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions!

Thanks. I have another one I was robbing parts off of. If I ever decide to get it running, I will go ahead and do the 029 coil swap to it too!

I am working on an 028 Wood Boss that refuses to start. I can get it to hit intermittently at best. I have vac and pressure tested it, and it passed. I looked at the piston and it looks good. I cleaned the muck off of the coil and set it with a business card. I installed my spark tester between the new plug and the coil wire and it is lighting up. I rebuilt the carb (went through the ultrasonic for 30 minutes). It is now flooded to the point it is running down the muffler. Compression tested right at 140. Any ideas?
Metering lever. I have had another 028 with a new kit ...metering diaphragm pin was wrong length.

As i read further i see its a runner. Congrats!

Do you use the same flywheel that was on the points version saw?

on some 028's you have to watch sometimes a 028 flywheel will have 2 key slots, depending on what brand of ignition it has.

The problem is solved and that's great, how about a little more on the o28/029 points conversion please. :)

As mark said it's just a simple coil swap.
I remove the flywheel and took the wire going to the old coil and tucked it in to have the original wiring there if needed.
As far as the 2 slot flywheels they may be rare but there are some that run a bosh or sema ignition.
the 029, 044,440 coil will work with the stock 028 flywheel.

I pulled my points and condenser out in case I needed them for something else down the road, but it is not necessary like 295 said. BTW, thanks for the excellent packaging of that McCulloch 300 @295 tramp !
