No, I did not need to mod the cylinder. I replaced it. This is a short stroke 026 or a big bore 024, whichever way you want to look at it. It works and runs. Yes, it was an experiment, but I had nothing to lose. The owner lost the filter. I just made sure that the top end I bought used the same stroke as the original 024.

The main reason I moved this saw up to an 026 was because the original owner lost the expensive air filter, compression was low, and the upgrade for more power was possible. Frankly, I was surprised that it all worked, but it did.

The real restriction in the 260 filter setup is the choke. I'm not so sure the mesh glued to the filter will not you much and it doesn't give me a good feeling in regards to dealing with dust.

Bold statement. I'd opine it's one of the restrictions, but not the only one.

I don't have a fresh 026 build here, but I'd have no issue doing timed cuts with a stock flocked/nylon filter with and without the choke installed vs a metal mesh filter with the choke installed.

I trimmed the choke plate on mine as thin as possible and gained some performance.
I guess what I am saying is you can pit as much filter area as you want on the filter itself, but the choke and will always bottle neck you.

Since I run 026`s for cutting most of the time I need to have a tuning screwdriver in my pocket full time, the tune will change with temp and barometer pressure drops or rises daily. It gets worse the more the saw is modified, mine are modified much more than most out there but they stand up to all the work they are subjected to very well running 15,000 rpm +.

Anyone ever try a 440 tank on a 260 ? be a good way to get a real air filter if it fits .

If I had a 440 I'd take some measurements. I've never had a 044/440 but I'm thinking that the chassis/tank is much larger. Id love the filter though.

the 044 handle bar fit my 026 ,by redrilling one hole on the bottom ,i may have to measure them both see if mounts are same locations

I agree with that. All the 260's I have owned have been like this.

I don't run mine in dirt. Just keeping the chip out.

I don't run my truck in dirt either, but the air filter is black with the stuff when I change it.

how much would you guys dare to open a muffler on an 026 that only has an L adjustment on the carb? no high. right now its stock with only a small hole in the center..

I wouldn’t. Your going to need a adjustable carb.

+1. The carb will have to be adjusted to compensate or it will run lean.
I'd get a Walbro WT-194 they are a good solution to the carb replacement.

@dec11ad Send me your address, and I will ship you a two screw carburetor in the spirit of Christmas 2020. I have a few spare WT-22's in my stash. Then, you can really open it up, they respond very nicely to a muffler mod. DW
