My 194 likes a bit more pop off. Check your lever.

It's possible you installed the key backwards. If the key is on top of the crank, the filed portion should be to the rear of the saw
But that would just be stock timing.

Yes, if he held the flywheel forward when he tightened it. I was thinking that if he installed the key backwards trying to advance it, he'd also turn the fw clockwise over the filed portion, which would retard it

Sorry I'm late to post, but ported saws like more aggressive muff mods than stock. When I opened up a dp muff cover on 044 #1 it would not idle for me either, so I put a stock dp cover on it and used the modified one on a 046.

20/1000 on the timing s/b fine and compatible with the muff mods.

Try to find an intake screen or get a new muff and do less mods.

Factory mufflers are always too restrictive, but on stock saws more is not always better, but it depends on the saw.

Best of luck with it, hope you can fix it with carb adjustments. (Also, some of the AM carbs are difficult to adjust the idle correctly).

My money is on the cheap AM carb. They are generally POS. Sometimes you get a good one.

Yes, too much advance can make the idle wonky. It varies from saw to saw. I'm not sure if some coils or flywheels/cases have slight timing variations or not. In my case, the saw would need to be excessively rich on the L needle to have good throttle response and come down to idle correctly. Then it would idle OK, then slowly die. If I hit the trigger, it would stall out. I'd have to feather it to get the revs back up, then it just repeated itself. I returned the timing to normal and the problem went away.

I changed the coil and the saw was able to be advanced and run normally again.

Put the old carb back on and see if the idle problems resolve first. Just don't lean rev the crap out of it for too long.

I thought about turning flywheel clockwise after I typed that.

i just drilled a hole above and below the stock one ,orig screen stays intact ,and the 3 holes act as a muffler baffle still ,the one big opening is similar to how the 034 saws came stock ,i do not like an overly loud worksaw .026 muffler 018.JPG

Well i got the darn thing figired out. Got it out a bit a go and went to fire it up and pulled ot rite out my other hand. All the fuel ran into tje cylinder. Pulled the carb off pressure tested it and pissed out fast as it came in. The needle valve would not hold air even of i pushed it in. Pulled needle from stock carb and all good now. Fires up revs out good and idles perfect.
Through the needle in the old carb and for the heck of it thought id presure test it and the dam thing held pressure so who knows.
Anyhow thanks for all the help and advice.

Awesome. You should have a strong little saw now.
