My cases have no data plate...old style oil pump...hole in both my cases is way too big for switch.

Maybe I'll fix that wrap.
I see, sounds like you'll be stuck with using the auxiliary kill switch on the other side of the saw! That's how my brother's early 281 is set up, the switch was mia when he got it and I can't find a new one so it gets choked to death.

I think I will make a little adapter plate for the momentary stop switch. Looks like someone hogged out the switch hole on both my cases.

Anyone know of a 12mm Stihl bar adapter that fits? 395 too big… White’s has one that looks like it will fit but it’s $25. Guess I may end up making that too.

I think I have one of those from a 162 parts saw that’s now in my 61-266…without pulling it out, it measures too small too. I think someone hogged this one out and then screwed some other kind of switch on it. I think if I screw a little triangle of sheetmetal on there I can bring the window back to size.

I like the momentary stop switches too, from a t540xp

use a 372 ground strap ... solder to the small terminal on the stop switch and run the other end to a ground spot... under blue coil is good... :)

You better buy it, it’s the last one. ;-) I can make them if I have to, and will probably go what I assume is later 288 style.
Discovered the dang stop switch is different (larger) from the myriad extras I have around…

Put it in wood a little tonight. Runs good for 130 psi hot! I like this saw. I think I am a 60/80cc guy as opposed to a 50/70.

Thanks much to all who have helped. Still have some odds and ends I need to get/order. I will add them to my parts wanted thread. Interesting mix of crusty and nice new parts.

I have a new Pro Safety Full wrap for it, not sure if I will keep it. Also have a stock half wrap but I think it’s pretty bent and chewed up.

I have plenty of the plastic sealings... just not too many of the v rings. these stupid parts are what make up the priceyness of these rebuilds...for sure.

Ifn u own a shop...your time is valuable. I wouldn't assume otherwise. No sense in making a 9$ part. ;)
Yes, but connections across the border mean less expensive labor and I don't mind helping out a fellow saw head/saw community. If nothing else, I can advise on best methods and make sure you're getting a fair deal.

Stihl working on the carbon fiber bar project, and one or two others for military trucks...

New piston and assorted other smalls showed up just in time for the long weekend.

Lookin at the baffle in the muffler tryin to decide if or how many or how large of holes to poke in it to get a little more flow but not reduce throttle response or get crazy loud. Yeah, that’s a question.

Put the new meteor in and ran once, then bogged and died with a backfire. Backfire on attempted restart. Yep. Flywheel didn’t fit super great and I probably didn’t get it tight enough. Filed the boogers off/out, sharpied the bore and crank, polished with flappy emery cloth rod until I got good even contact. Green loctite (might regret that) and tightened the wee out of it along with tapping the socket to seat the FW on the crank. 8055A213-049D-42A3-BB20-762D52427ADE.jpeg

Like how it runs. Snappy. 150 psi hot. Can feel the extra compressions…maybe should put a decomp in it.

I got some Dolmar 7900 parts (now I need a clutch too @Shane¹ ) from @mettee. He threw in some muffler outlets and I put one straight to use.
Tried it out on a stump in my yard this evening.

I think a pigtail fuel line would be better. Once I knocked the filter down it finished the stump

I just like that gunmetal blue color you get when you get steel the right temp. She kicked butt today. Felled and bucked a decent sized burnt pine. @Woodslasher the aux shutoff works well.
One question: the high idle with the op pres lever holds it almost full throttle…little too exciting to start that way. Any ideas why? Luckily she starts and run at an idle.

Dropped a few trees with it. 32” Stihl bar n stock semi chisel chain works good, not too grabby. Bit heavy though. Gonna mount a 36” .404 bar on it to cut down a palm because the wider kerf helps with the fibers. It’s sprung a bit soft, and the hacked wrap is hitting top cover when it’s sideways, so I think I’m gonna put the 7th mount on and the full wrap.

Pulled this thread up to give y’all a chuckle. Was running the 288 bucking this beast up and dragging it away.

Was pretty impressed with it with 36” skip.
It was getting dark and I went to shut the saw off to drag the last log for the day…choke popped off in my hand. Probably pulled it too fast in a hurry and it was old. It’s kinda hard to get the top cover screws off a 288 when it’s running…I guess I should fix the switch situation.
