I haven’t used any automotive stuff, but I’ve been thinking about trying some.

What kind of epoxy are you using?

I’ve been using west system epoxy with great results.

I’ve been finishing with sayerlack and again it’s been great!

West systems is good stuff. That's what I use as well.

Regarding the automotive polyurethane finish.

I have 2 pieces on my deck in the direct sun for a year now.
They are as nice as the day I sprayed them.
No yellowing.
No cracking.
Regular off the shelf product would start breaking down and total fail at 18-24 months.

My cost here for a 6 liter kits is $110.
It's middle of the Rd quality.
Price is comparable to wood polyurethane / varnishes that fail and discolor and I have tried all of them.

I haven't tried the auto poly over epoxy yet but the chemist said it will work fine.
In fact avation, marine and auto companies often top coat epoxy products with industrial polyurethane.
I might one day but thus far I am getting good surface finish with epoxy layer build up.
App sand Re apply till it looks like glass.
3-6 coats.

Something I learned this week was put a bit of 99.9 alcohol in with the epoxy.
Breaks down bubbles and thins out the epoxy for easier application.
No torching the piece though as it will burst into flames!

I sprayed almost a gallon of Sayerlacker on my table and it’s been in the sun for 3 1/2yrs and it’s just like the day I finished it.

I got it from the loft of a barn in Kentucky.

It was actually in the barn on the farm my mom grew up on. When my grandpa was selling the farm and moving I saved the lumber.

My mom was so happy to see the table built from a piece of that farm.

That's awesome! I hope to be able to build some things from wood I mill from the old family farm in Vermont some day! Just have to find the time to get up there and take down some trees for my 2nd cousin and mill them up. Sugar maple of course... the very trees that have been providing me syrup my entire life.

For the guys that are finishing large slabs, how are you doing It? Do you use a router and sled, do you have a large plane, hand plane, belt sander or other?

I have a 32" x 60" piece of hard maple that is about 8" thick. I plan to mill some slabs but I don't have a way to finish the surface yet. I was thinking of doing the router and sled method. Maybe there's a post on this already?

Router and sled, power hand plainer and sanding or if 16-18” wide I’ll skim cut with my radial arm and a dato blade. No wide plainer yet but have some ideas to make something with my machinists uncle. When I get it built we’ll see how it works.

I use a router sled followed by hand planes, followed by card scrapers followed by random orbit sander.

Both tops sanded and stained with natural watco danish oil. Time to make the bases and start sealing the tops.
