While waiting for the brown box with the Husky paint, I got the Valspar cleaned off. Bearings are de-greased and ready for the cases to be assembled, but I’m going to paint the welds on the one case half before I bolt the cases together.1250DE03-FAA2-4DB0-A5EE-EF42427A81DD.jpegC256C921-7DF4-469C-8B73-ADE3CB64A888.jpeg1B81FE00-8243-4930-91AA-CD0E49C1022C.jpeg7BE59FD6-05B8-4392-B06E-5683D7A6C3D7.jpeg

Nice work Kevin.
Thank you Jeff

been waiting for the "spinny thing money shot" ....and bang.....saw porn at its best. !!!
good to see ya Kev....if only online. when I was your age I worked 100 weeks too...now I can't stay awake for that long :)
I’m finding that I don’t sleep for longer than 2-3 hours now. I wake up, but at least I can still get back to sleep. Good seeing you still around too Angelo, are you planning on getting to Dan’s in May ?

This is pretty impressive kevin.
I’m hoping that this saw is impressive after she starts cutting wood, but thanks Ryan !

very much planning on Dan's.... always good to see the "band" get back together !!!!
I may be stopping out to see Doc before then, if I do I'll look you up.
I was having lots of "issues" that I traced back to lack of sleep..stuff you would never think could be sleep deprivation derived...took a while but it caught up to me.

Good to see a build thread Kev. The 395 you ported for me is a beast, plain and simple.

Thanks for taking the time to post a thread.

At least for me, an 066 cutting plate works on a 394/5 if you rotate the jug 90*. They actually line up perfectly enough.

Only thing I caught was using the MattyO tool backwards. The smaller end goes on the inner bearing race and the larger end gets a washer so the soft aluminum doesn’t get chewed up. Hope there is no damage there. Also, I could be wrong and the tool is meant to be flipped for different models.

The welding looks great. Mag is very hard to do well.

Thanks Doc !
Mattys tool is just propped there, I never pull or press a bearing into Magnesium, I allways heat the Mag and drop the bearing into place. I never even tried to use the 066 plate .......... great idea !!

The BIG mistake was that I drilled and tapped the top cover side bolt in the wrong location. The calipers show where the center of the hole should be. I didn’t realize the cover I used was tweaked from heat....... so I had to weld it again to fill the hole, then used a new cover and the calipers to do it the correct way.

You know this 394/395 is going to be really nice and all, BUT I’m waiting for the next build

Just joking....well kind of
I’m looking forward to comparing this one and the one that is up next

Uggh.

Reweld.

:(
Pissed me off royally, was supposed to be a good runner, not a pile of twisted and tweaked junk parts

Those side cover threaded holes are a poor design. I was able to use an insert that held but it was pretty wallowed out and I was lucky.

This repair will be much better. Nice job.
Thanks Pat, the M5 helicoil tap just fell through the hole in the back too, this front cover thread was about one of the worst I’ve seen

Advantage, Stihl!

SORRY. HAD TO.
Too funny Doc !!
I don’t know which I like better, these 394/5 or the 661........

And wouldn’t you know it ........ found the lost 395 fixture as I was looking for washers for the new one

Still waiting for the Husky OEM paint to show up, so more spinning on the lathe today

I’d be curious to see how they compare running bars up to 36.” That’s the longest mine would ever run.
I plan on getting the 36” RS 404 setup with an 8 tooth drive on her for testing

Organized kaos still has some structure, the only structure in that rectangle is the frame itself.

Ooooooooo more "spinny money shots" !!!!
That’s just about everything though, base, extension, and squish is all cut

A relatively long box arrived last night, knew what it was as soon as I picked it up, could hear the ball in each can rattle around 20DC7D7A-4670-48BE-B6C4-4987D5F5DBB8.jpeg

DNT be affraid to try a Big Sert kit, same setup as a time sheet except the outside diameter is larger to fix the really wallered out holes, the inserts them selves cost more then a time sert but the kit is the same price at 72.00, I realize Kevin is a great welder and wasn't nessecary for him but it might help someone who doesn't have access to a great welder. Hope this helps someone.

Great welder ????
Not so sure about that, Shawn Carr is a great welder !
I just line everything up, close my eyes, hit the switch, count to 3 on thin stuff, 8 on thick stuff, and everything is fine !

Link ?

Some of these Husky threads are so wallered out that even the Bigger thread replacement systems wont work. This is a 5/16 tap to use these E-Z Lok thread inserts as repairs. Are the Big-Serts even larger ? Would you happen to be able to measure the OD of a M5 x 8 Big Sert repair sleeve ?
