They can be made into good runners, but it takes a lot of work.

It is pretty strange, but I am guessing it is a reflection of different cutting environments. I would take a stock 690 over a 395 any day :/ in milling especially. Guess it is the old torque vs HP gained by rpm arguement:zpong:

I would love to help you Woodrow, but the importer I deal with cannot get them anymore since ALCO bought out Solo. If I could source them I'd source you one or sell you mine. If I was you I'd talk to M/Mind, he can get the 665's (same saw) and then source an OEM 681 piston/cylinder for it. The 681 cylinder is better than the 7900 cylinder for sure. Grab one before they dry up, good saws.

Several members here have said that a 680 in good trim will outcut a 603. I can't verify as none of my 603s are runners but the 680's I've run were pretty strong stock. The old version 690 is a pretty decent runner, the 670 is kind of a dog for how heavy it is.

What the 690 and 603 suffer from though is a bottleneck at the carb/filter- the filter is too small for the displacement of the engine and plugs up fairly quick.

Aha! Now there an understanding dawns. The solo's I have used come with a pod/west coast filter setup. So have a less restricted intake coupled with a velocity stack. In fact just put one on a 670 I mentioned earlier. (Still can't find the 690 piston to try a swap).

As for the 603, even in harder timbers here in stock form would take the 690.

Incidentally anyone have a 690 piston they would part with?

Greetings gentlemen, I was curious if anyone had opinions about a solo 652? There's one NIB available locally, what might be a great steal of a price for a smaller 51.8cc saw like this one? Thanks!

I have a solo 667. Any body know what piston and cylinder would match up as a direct bolt on for more cc's? And, anyone on here have a good porting recipe that I could send it off to for some work? I've worked with MMWS and was happy but would like to share the work with other porters.
