Seeing the 603 here, made me think about finishing mine off. Mostly how much better the 690 cylinder seems to be in my eyes atleast.

Can anyone tell me what the stroke of the solo 690 is?

My maths tells me it's 38mm same as the 670,680.

The ipl lists a different crank though. While the 603 is again a different crank.

The solo 690 55mm piston on a 603 crank is 100cc, compared to a 603 56mm piston being 103cc

I come up with the same 38mm. Carl, what are your thoughts on the 603 after porting?

Thanks,

Intake and exhaust still appear to be close to stock?

So the squish has been cut?

Transfer entrance to cylinder has been converted to a single(?), as opposed to quads. I guess the is because off the removable transfers plates alow the charge to mingle as opposed to the 690 where they are truly seperate.

Thanks again, nice to see a different approach to what I did :)
Intake was lowered but not widened as it was already wide. Exhaust raised but not widened.
.020" has been taken from the squish. And a lot of blowdown added. All I really did to the trans was level them up.
All I did on the lowers was clip the corners to match the gasket. Everything else is stock. :)

According to Mike Acre's website, the 603 has a 42mm stroke which equates with the displacement calculator on MacDizzy's website. I know the 690 uses the same crank as the 603 and the 670/680 share the same crank.

I thought it ran pretty good but let's get @rocco490 in here to give his opinion. I do believe i left some on the table as I was afraid of breaking the recoil in it. IMO the recoil is a tad weak. It may hold up just fine and I'm being paranoid. Lol.

I have a solo 603 and it was ported by miller mod saws I havent ran it in any large wood. I have ran it in white and red oak with the 8 pin and a 20 inch bar and was cutting large rounds into halves. It did well with that. So far what I have noticed is it has alot more vibration than my 395s but i dont mind it at all. The powerband is very broad you can dog it in and lug it down alot of rpm and it will keep cutting and it does hold good rpm in the cut. Throttle response is okay but definetly not as quick as many of the other 90cc class ported stuff. the saw holds alot of bar oil and fuel it has huge tanks on it so gives alot of run time. For a 100 plus cc saw it is very compact and it is not heavy for its displacement either, its lighter than I expected actually. I dont think it will keep pace with my masterminded 395s in any size wood as it sits currently. I am worried about parts availability. I do like this saw though and will be keeping it. I do plan to have Mr. Miller go into it again at some point and get all he can out of it. I am looking for another 603 eventually as well if anyone plans to sell one let me know.

Solo 665/7910s are wicked saws by the way! Any solo conversation wouldn't be complete without mentioning them! You cant go wrong with one from Mastermind or Miller mod saws get them while you still can fellas

I wonder how a SOLO 690/694 would do ported anyone have or ran one???????

The 694 is the Solo version of the Dolmar 9000/9010 (and Makita DCS-9000) and stock they are unimpressive. The saw I like most out of that line-up is the early Dolmar 9000, as it has an unlimited coil. I rebuilt several of the 9000/9010/694s years ago for a ranch owner that loves those saws.

So you chased rpm then to boost the saws performance :)

Any particular reason you left the exhaust width stock?

Hope you don't mind me asking, I come at this stuff from being taught by old time motorcycle mechs. So my approach is different, just wish I had the coordination to make my porting look as factory as this.

Hope I am not being an argumentative, but they are not. Maths does not add up, a 55mm piston on a 42mm crank does not make a 90cc saw.

Secondly I just checked, the 690 conrod is shorter than the 603. Will have to goto town and grab a battery for the digital verniers to get the exact numbers for you though.

Should also do a 670 crank while I am at it.

I haven't compared the 690 crank to the 603 crank, but it wouldn't surprise me if the conrod was different. I do know the 670 and 680 cranks are just about identical because I'm in the process of rebuilding a 670 and fitting it with a 680 top end and the clearances are the same between the 670 and 680 crankcases as far how far the piston rides up and down in the cylinder.

As far as the displacement and stroke of the 690 and 603- I don't know myself but the numbers on Mike Acre's website jibe with this online displacement calculator:

Exhaust was already close to skirt width from the factory.

Mikes doesn't have the stroke or piston size for 690, only 603.

690 doesn't but a 694 does make 90cc with that calc

694 has a 52mm piston
690 has a 55mm piston
603 has a 56mm piston

Formula (atleast 1 version of it) is

(Pi x radius squared)stroke ÷ 1000

I have a 670 here that if I can find my 690 piston I will try to see if the 690 cylinder fits, will most likely have to relieve the case somewhere, same as putting a 603 cylinder and crank into a 690 case. Has to be some difference between cranks aswell, want to find it now :)

Exhaust was already close to skirt width from the factory.

I think I was able to get an extra 2-3mm each side safely. My piston was new from solo, wider skirt?

Jacob j had to me the excellent idea of using a p100 piston

Im glad Im not the only one that feels that way about these bigger Solos. Im very unimpressed with my 690. Im curious what timing is in it. May just have to have a look soon.

They can be made into good runners, but it takes a lot of work.

I have a Solo 681.....its easily as strong as my ported ms660, and the Solo is stock.....no joke. Highest power to weight ratio of any saw I have ever ran or read the specs on.
