If you had to choose between a Makita 7900 and a Makita 9010, which would you choose and WHY?

POLL: Makita 7900 or Makita 9010

*** In regard to bucking and falling (not milling), vote on stock saw for reliability, durability, and performance for "CC-LB". Comment on both saws in stock and ported form. I don't know when Makita discontinued the 9010 so enlighten me on that. Thanks!

My question would be; for what use? Ported, or not? Availability is another issue, especially on certain parts.

For bucking and falling (not milling) vote on stock saw for reliability, durability, and performance for "CC-LB". Comment on both saws in stock and ported form. I don't know when Makita discontinued the 9010 so enlighten me on that. Thanks!

Depends on how long of a bar you need. I can’t comment on the bigger saw but the 7900s are great, although coming from Jonsered the ergos are kinda weird.

Last 9010 was produced in March of 2018. At least to my knowledge. Probably a little before then, but that's when the last serial number stickers went on.
The 9010 is a great saw, but parts are getting harder and harder to find.

I'd stay with a 7900 for what you're describing. The 7900 is nice and nimble, and smooth to operate. Parts are still easy to find. Ported they are fantastic, in my opinion.

Get a 9010 for a fun saw, and as an extra saw, if you want one. There's no way I'd lug one around for general duty cutting. In the CC-LB department the 9010 is heavy and slow, but a lot of torque. It's also super simple, and easy to work on. It's getting harder and harder to find them for sale, although there is a SOLO 694 for sale here on the forum. Same saw, different color.

7900 specifically for the price point and parts availability, $1900 and change gets you 2 brandy new ones. Port one for a main saw and have a stocker back up that can be ported at any time. This weight class saw is probably the largest you would like to carry all day in the woods.

Not a fan of either, but after owning both of them, I'd prefer the 9010 due to it's more robust design, and for long bars, the handles are too close together on the 7900 and it causes balance issues in my opinion.

Power to weight 7900. Parts easier to find than 9010. But since no one else has said it why not both??
^^^--- THIS ---^^^

If You wanna play with saws and aim that high You ain't just gonna get away dipping Your pinky finger tip into it!

But as a person owning and running both saws You desire info on, PS-7900 every day of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year, year after year in a row (I actually am doing this ;) ).
Reason why?
The 9010 is a long bar torque monster, but she is big and heavy and very tiring to use. She is also slower in cut compared to the 7900 with mid and short bars.
My longest B&C setup is 36" 3/8", and contrary to what others may claim a stock PS-7900 can handle it perfectly fine both in power and B&C oil output.
That been said, a 7900 is the more versatile unit of the two.

As Sondre mentioned, parts availability can be a big factor too and You should consider it.
7900 parts are easier to obtain than 9010 parts.

Durability:
She may not look like it, but the 7900 chassis is bulletproof and reliable.

What this chassis is not is idiot proof!
Get a Stihl for that and pay the price!

But damn do these saws take a beating.
Most of mine are used saw purchases and some of them did not have an easy life prior to coming into my hands.

I won't comment on the reliability if the 9010 since the one I run is practically as new having been a NOS unit, and the other one needs a little love after living a hard life at her first owner.

Your chosen user name should negate the need to ask in a forum what saws they recommend You to get.

In this case, either You are a Dolmar/Makita guy or You are not.
If it is the former You should end up with both a 7900 & 9010 either way eventually. ;)
