That's an awesome saw.

As far as porting theory goes, I have lots of questions. Which transfers open first? Do the rears open, to blow out the spent charge, and then the primaries and secondaries open to bring in fresh charge?

There's a lot going on in that jug. Makes you wonder what they would be doing if they had survived till today.

Maybe @jacob j. Has put a wheel on one, but I have not yet. In the near future when I get some more time I will. It sure would be neat to see what they would have been doing today. They were pretty ahead of their time back then. Heck in 1974 they had come out with the bottom fed quad port.

I put a degree wheel on a P-61 years ago and wrote the numbers down but of course they're long gone and I can't remember what they were. The exhaust port is this series is wide and flat, similar in respect to other saws of that era like the 038 Magnum. I know the upper fifth and sixth transfer openings in the P-45 jugs are narrow and open at pretty much same time as the main transfers. The boost port in the P-655 jug opens just after the main transfers.

Pioneer was way ahead of their time - they had pretty much the best anti-vibe when the P-41/P-61 saws came out and with the Boyeson two-stage reeds, they'd turn a long bar very well in soft woods. My dad's favorite set-up in the mid-late 70's was a P-61/62 with a 42" bar for felling, and a 36" bar for bucking. I think at one point he had 15-16 P-61/62/655 saws.

Whats the difference between the P42 and the P40-41? I have a P40 but I hardly see them mentioned anywhere.

Not a whole lot really. The p40 and p41 have different ignition systems. There was early p40 and late with some minor differences. Good strong running 4 cube saw. They are a bottom fed quad transfer cylinder. Some of the p42 saws had the 6 transfer set up.

Were those the P42HP? I've seen quite a few of those and most had the "High Performance" decal on the side of the top handle frame.

Yep exactly I just haven't put the decals back on mine yet. There was a cb model witch was a base model more or less, and no 6 transfers. Then there was the cbw that was like the old western models, and had the best they had to offer at the time. Those usually had the 6 transfer top ends. If the saw doesn't have the id tag then it's just a guessing game.

Acres shows the P45 at 72cc vs 68cc for the P40 - 42. My P46 has the boost ports and K & N air cleaner setup with full wrap. Does anyone know if they came that way originally?

Acres is right about the p45, but the p40-42 is actually just under 66cc. I think you mean your p45 right? It's very possible your saw came with the K&N set up originally. They started using that set up after mount st Helens erupted. The ash was going right through the filter system, and dusting top ends. If you can share a pic of your saw.
