Need to start out grinding the cutting edge in the middle of the wheel, then lift it straight up along the wheel to reduce the heel. No twisting or turning or tilting.

That is absolutely correct.

And for a redneck drill angle gauge, 2 hex nuts pinched together on the flats makes a 120° angle, which is proper for a normal bit

The line in the middle tells you if the heel is cut back far enough. If pointing to one o clock like this one is, the heel has clearance and will cut. If pointing to eleven o clock the heel is higher than the cutting edge and will not cut. Just like rakers on a chain.

Alternate sides when grinding to try and stay even, cool bit if extensive work is to be done, like sharpening a broken bit. This keeps the temper. Keep both sides even as possible, a drill gauge is simple shows the right angle and centered.

I've never tried a belt sander to sharpen a drill bit. But if they're good enough to sand a cylinder base.....
