One difference is the piston. 266se had a windowed full skirt piston. 268xp has the normal windowed piston. Not sure when this happened in the 266se, 266xp, 268xp lineup

Weird. I’ve got a 268G here that has the full skirt piston

So what is the difference between a 266xp and a 268xp?

2xp, lol.

Actually from what I can tell, the 268xp is like a smaller 272xp. Bigger filtration, bigger exhaust, top cover and so on. Parts are all different between the two. They just happen to be the same size.

Intake, porting, and air filter setup, and the 268 got a taller top cover and muffler. MOST 266s had a two piece ignition and MOST 268s had a single piece ignition but there may have been some crossover.
That would make sense. That's why there are a few versions of the Jred 670. Standard, super, and champ

Nice. Hard to say, really.

Wouldn't a 268G be an open port model with heated habdles?

Who knows who’s been in it. Recoil says 268xp
I don’t see heated handle switch but I need to look again

In addition to that (and likely more, that I dont recall) the cylinder is different, as the 268xp has larger transfers (can be seen from the outside, by the size of the bulges over the transfers), and the specs show a .2kW higher power rating.

Also, as far as I know the 266 never came with the one piece coil and corresponding case etc.

I attach a 1987 Husky document on the topic of different parts;

Thanks Bill
I guess someone has messed with it
In the right direction, though. Other than the piston, ime. It's worth about 500 rpm to replace it with a 268 windowed meteor. Not sure if its the windows or the full skirt that slows it down

A 266xp from Meteor is full windowed. Wether or not it's just a 268xp piston in another box I don't know. But pretty much what is from Husqvarna.

All this 266 talk made me get mine out for some exercise. Made a vidja just for fun. :)

Even when I take a couple saw's out to cut with, a 266 is usually one of those saw's, it just seems to always fit into whatever program is going on at the time.

Yep. I was referring to a windowed piston like what's in a 272, rather than the windowed full skirt variety like in Dan's saw

....

Actually from what I can tell, the 268xp is like a smaller 272xp. Bigger filtration, bigger exhaust, top cover and so on. Parts are all different between the two. They just happen to be the same size.

According to the IPL etc. story, the 272xp replaced the 268xp as the top model in this "family" early 1991, and was virtually the same saw as a late production 268xp, except for the top end and decals (+ number tag of course).

At the same time they basically put the open port 66 top end on the 268, and called the result just 268 (no suffix). On many markets this 268 open port version replaced the (266 based) 66, but not on all.

In addition they continued to make the 268xp for a while, but called it the 268 Special. At least some of those saws said both XP and Special on them.

An other thing that happened with this model family early 1991 was that the 61 got the one piece coil and case + a lot of other (more or less associated) changes. A larger carb venturi and a larger muffler was part of this.
The top cover still was gray, but not the same one (more room was needed under it). Some time in 1993 the top cover was changed to orange color (not connected to any major internal changes, that I recall.

Production of the 66 and 266xp was transferred from Sweden to the Tomos factory in Koper, Yugoslavia/Slovenia at some point, but I haven't been able to pinpoint it on the time-line (the 66 may have been made there all the time, for all I know). Possibly the pre-1991 61 has been made there as well, and the 162SE certainly has.

Then there are the Brazilian production, concerning the 61 (post 1991 version), 268 (open port version) and 272xp - that should be fairly well known, and still is going on.

The above is "as far as I know" at this point, it isn't necessarily the eternal truth, carved in stone.
