Has the 661 been proven like the 066/660?

A 661 is a good tree service saw, not an all day every day saw...just my opinion.

I "personally" wouldn't bank on one logging.
Thanks man. I've heard similar input from cutters I know. Who where Stihl guys. They went 395. Said the 395 is superior to the 661. Honestly they said the 661 was garbage in the woods:)

I have 7 friends that work the woods that HATE the trouble with 661s..they love the power but not the issues that have come with it.

I'd personally buy a 390 and a few gallons of loc-tite.

First that I had heard that the 661s were that finicky. I guess you either love them or hate them. I personally would take a slight loss in power and stay with tried and true 066/660. HO oil pump.

A 661 puts out plenty of oil with the pin knocked in.

I like them for what I do which is what I base things on when I make a purchase, but I don't think I'd bank on one for gallons of fuel everyday.

They are no 394/395. However...I would probably buy a 661 over a 390xp...which I think was its intended competition.

Buy it to take to the woods or cut firewood 2 times a month and make you-tube videos ?

Take a breath Ryan. Lol

I wasn't being a dick..I was serious, I have 2 of them but they aren't my bread and butter..I hardly use a saw that size so the things that are known to be problematic with them don't bother a guy like me as much..my stock 661 is a pain in the ass to start warm and I gotta hold the throttle open to even get it to fire sometimes...that would piss me off 10x more if I was in the middle of nowhere with only one saw...I can walk to the trailer or toolbox and just grab another saw..but I still think its *B-S.... you gotta tolerate that with a relatively new saw that's over 1000 bucks.

My 201 has me royally pissed off right now.

I still like these new saws over the old ones..if I get a good one.

Sorry I revived this thread..., LOL. Just wish I would have known more about the Max Flow a week ago.

I hear you Ryan. Shouldn't have those issues with a saw that expensive.
The Maxflo will pay for itself through use. They are well worth the money even for a firewooder. I have two, one on 460 and one on 660. They also increase performance. [emoji106]

Tell your boy to just pony up and buy one, it's worth it.

He couldn't believe the video and will replace the HD sooner than later. Just bad timing on my part or I would have gone that route for him already. Hell, his old one was gone, as was the whole rear handle, airbox, carb, etc. First day back on the job after a complete rebuild from a big end bearing failure someone forgot to securely latch the truck bin it was in. Fell out going down a 4 lane highway and somebody ran over it. Yeah. Bad day for the dude. Ruined my day too when he called me and told me about it. Lucky though, too. Coulda gone through someone's windshield. Not exactly a warranty repair, though I did get lucky and found him a beautiful tank (complete) and a M carb from Bryce at Customchainsaw parts for $200. I just got it all back together today and haven't tried starting it yet. Hope the carb behaves like the last one did. Flawless. Two year old saw with none of the buggy behaviour everyone complains about. Back to square one now with a carb and solenoid of unknown vintage. Could be a whole other can o' worms just getting it to run right regardless of the filtration.

661 has more torque. Almost like a hybrid between a 390 and 066 with the good qualities from both saws with mtronic. No long term experience with the 661, just what I think from one month.
I like a 661 but love my 390. Mine isnt shy of torque at all with 28" of 404:D
